If it’s not broken, don't fix it H ere in M orrow County, we are very for tu n ate to have the Port o f M orrow as ou r e c o nomic development leader. T hrough the last decade or so, the Port o f Morrow has been very successful in p ro m o tin g econom ic expansion and family wage jobs in Morrow County. I would even go as far as to say that the Port o f Morrow has been the most success ful port in the entire state o f O regon. The average wage in M orrow County ranks fifth highest among all counties in the state, and highest in Easter Oregon. The Port o f M orrow has done this primarily without local tax dollars. In this year’s proposed budget of $25 m illion, the Port o f Morrow collects $104,000 in property taxes. T h is y ear, th e re are two long term com m issio n e rs for the Port o f Morrow up for reelec tion, Larry L indsey and Marvin Padberg. Over the years these two men have donated countless hours o f their tim e at m eetings representing all M orrow County residents. Through their hard work and effort, as well as the hard work and effort o f the employees o f the Port o f Morrow, we have a hugely successful port. They deserve by their efforts and results of their efforts to be reelected. I w ould urge all o f you to join me in casting my vote to reelect Larry Lindsey and Marvin Padberg for another four-year term. After all, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Vem Russell Boardman, OR Support Kindle for school board To the Editor; We are writing in support o f Becky Kindle for the board of directors o f the Morrow County Schools. Becky and her hus band Jim have children in the county school system and the have been very ac tive in youth activities in the community and supportive o f the school system. We think the addition of young parents to the board is a very positive thing and we commend Becky for being willing to take the time and energy to serve. B e c k y h o ld s a highly responsible position with the local bank and has demonstrated her ability to think through issues and to communicate her thoughts in a very businesslike man ner that we think w ould be extrem ely valuable to the overall function o f the board. There are no per sonal rewards at the end of the election if I win. The only reason to run for the office o f Commissioner for the Port o f Morrow, is to make a positive difference in the future o f M orrow County and the West Uma tilla region. So why am I run ning a cam paign for an office in an organization as effective and powerful as the Port o f M orrow? The Port o f Morrow has undis- putedly been successful in bringing large industrial projects to the Boardman industrial site. Gary Neal has done a brilliant job o f beatin g the co m p etitio n at the Port o f Umatilla to luring industry and jobs. M arvin Padberg is a fine gentlem an and sincerely wants the Port to be suc cessful. I have no deroga tory comments for any o f the Port Commissioners or Port staff. Why then, would I put m yself through the work, expense and stress of running a campaign against a successful board chair man? Hard to figure, isn’t it? I guess it is about trying to continue the successes of the Port while taking local communities interests into consideration. Although the Port o f Morrow has brought in industry, it has also dumped the industrial process water downwind from Boardman and upwind from Irrigon. This presents a problem for Irrigon for quality of life is sues. Unless the wastewater is adequately treated to re move the odors, the Port’s success could lead to the demise o f one o f the largest communities it serves. There are many op portunities for the Port of M orrow to work closely with the various communi ties it serves, and to provide jobs locally, not just at the Boardman location. The lo cal communities know what they need and how to grow business. The Port can help with providing support for local efforts. I am running my campaign to give the peo ple o f M orrow County a choice. Do they w ant to have a say in what the Port of Morrow does, or do they want to leave things to the will o f the Port? I believe that the Port o f M orrow should respond to the local communities and follow the com m unities’ rules when operating in their domain. Adhering to, and support ing, local zoning codes and ordinances will help the com m unities shape their own destinies. 1 have to keep tell ing m yself that the fight is w orth the effort. My purpose is to give people a choice. Do they w ant to have influence or not? I believe that the people need to have a voice in their government, the Port o f Morrow. The choice is theirs, and I believe I have a responsibility, perhaps a civic duty, to let them m ake that choice at the ballot box. Sincerely, Gerald (Jerry) Breazeale Heppner, OR Morrow County is lucky It is my hope that the voters w ill consider support for Larry Lindsey and Marv Padberg for Mor row County Port Commis sioners in the upcom ing election. These two people have proven themselves in the past by working to bring ECONOMIC DEVELOP MENT to the community. They have worked together with the other commission ers and the manager o f the Port o f M orrow to keep local industries in the Port for local jobs for our com munity. One only needs to drive through the Port o f Morrow to note the activ ity o f the businesses and the growth and expansion since these two have been on the Port Com m ission. T heir dedication to keep our comm unities thriving with economic strength is unwavering. The Port o f Mor- row is one o f the m ost aggressive ports o f the 23 ports in the state o f O r egon. It is also the largest Inland Container dock in the United States, and Larry and Marv have been a part o f the forceful machine that has brought this about. The Port is responsible for help ing to generate over 2000 jobs at the present time. It was my p riv i lege to w ork with Larry and Marv for 17 years as a fellow commissioner. I am fully aware o f the time, ef fort and dedication it takes to bring about the progress o f production to the Port and the community.
