This year’s event will take place Wednesday, May 11, at the Pendleton Red Lion. The purpose of the awards is to recognize in dividuals who help to make our schools the best they can be. Approximately 36 education staff are honored each year. “ T e a c h e rs and education staff work so hard throughout the year to make sure our kids get the best educations in the most fun and productive environment possible, and it’s easy for us all to take their work for granted,” said Casey White, Crystal Apple Awards director. “These outstanding people inspire our youth and make a difference in our commu nities, and they deserve this prestigious honor.” The awards are open to all classified and licensed staff in Umatilla and Morrow county school districts. It is not open to administrators, though ad ministrators are encouraged to nominate exemplary employees. The award can be given to individuals who work full-time or part-time in any capacity other than administration. The staff member must have worked in his or her current posi tion for at least one year to qualify. Anyone in the general public may submit a nomination. In addition to the Crystal Apple Awards, nominations also are be ing accepted for the Doug Flatt Memorial Leadership Award, which recognizes an outstanding administrator. Doug Flatt, the late chief executive officer of Mid Columbia Bus, was well- known to school districts throughout Oregon, partic ularly those in the Eastern Oregon region. Doug lost his life in a tragic plane crash while on business six years ago. In guiding the growth and operation of MidCo, Doug exemplified the finest qualities of lead ership, attention to detail, service to his community, interpersonal relationships, and customer service. The purpose of this award is to recognize a school admin istrator or superintendent who exemplifies the same qualities for which Doug was legendary. Nomination forms, qualifications and a list of past winners are available on the Crystal Apple web site, www.umesd.kl2.or.us/ crystalapple.
