Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, June 9,2010 - FIVE Mary Michael Memorial Scholarships awarded to Riverside graduates United Way distributes $217,995 The Mary Michael ebration. Gabriel will enroll at Department of Human on the City of Boardman to non-profit agencies at the University of Idaho as a math major. Evelyn Garcia has been described by many as a “Natural Leader.” Willing to be involved, she has been a Cinco de Mayo folkloric dancer for many years, sang in the choir of both her church and Riverside High School, a RHS cheerleader. Key Club member and volunteered at the monthly community breakfasts, and at” No Room At The Inn.” Evelyn plans to continue her education at Western Oregon University in Mon mouth family selected five River side High School graduates from the class of 2010 to receive $250 scholarships to further their education. Mary Michael Memorial Scholarships are awarded for long-term involvement in the Boardman Commu nity and Riverside High School. G a b riel L. Cox has been active outside the classroom holding leader ship positions in Key Club, Drama Club, and a member of National Honor Society. Gabby has gone beyond the basic expectations of club service and has volun teered for many additional activities, such as serving at community breakfasts, and organizing children’s games and the Fun Run at the annual 4lh of July Cel A m a n d a M cK - night's work to build her college savings fund has limited her time for com munity involvement. She has served the commu nity providing childcare Services Parenting Skills Workshops. Helping with blood drives, Cystic Fi brosis and Breast Cancer Awareness activities result ed from membership in Key Club and National Honor Society. Amanda served a dual role in the Drama Club - as a performer and as personal assistant to the director. Amanda plans to attend Eastern Washington University, and has set a career goal to be a social worker. K ayla N elson is known for her ability to juggle sports and school. She has been active in bas ketball, softball, and volley ball, serving often as team captain. She has been a member and officer of both National Honor Society and Key Club, and served Youth Advisory Council. Kayla plans to attend Blue Mountain Community Col lege and become an X-Ray Technologist. The Board of Di- rectors of the United Way of Umatilla and Morrow Counties has approved funding distributions to local non-profit organiza tions for 2010-11, as recom mended by the 28 member United Way Community In vestment Committee which is made up of community volunteers. A c c o r d i n g to Kricket Nicholson, United Way Executive Director, “This funding is made pos sible through the willing ness of people to make a financial commitment to the communities where they live. Their generosity helps sustain the local services provided by our 24 partner agencies.” The United Way allocations committee spent six weeks analyzing partner Jason Hendricks has demonstrated his lead ership skills by being a member of Riverside’s pep band, and a district Scholar Athlete in track and field, football, and basketball. Jason acquired the Eagle Scout Level in Boy Scouts of America: building and installing benches and trash containers for the city; cooking and cleaning for Fourth of July breakfast; serving in the color guard for the community parade. Willow Creek Water Park to open June 12 Willow Creek Wa ter Park will open for the 2010 season on Saturday, June 12. Weather permitting the park will be open until midnight. Regular hours are Monday through Saturday 1-8 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Three sessions of swim lessons will be held this year. The first will be June 28 through July 8. The second will be July 19-29. The last session will be August 9-19. The cost for swim lessons is $35 per session or $30 if you have a swim pass. Individual passes are $75 and family passes are $150. Daily rates are $2 for 0-4 years and senior citizens, $3 for 5-17 years, and $4 for adults (18+).
