The girls beat out 18 other teams to claim the team trophy. The boys earned third place. This w as a tune-up m eet for the Mustangs, who will be competing at their district meet this Saturday. J o rd a n H a tfie ld was a bright spot for the Mustangs. He earned four first place finishes - 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, triple ju m p , and 4x100 m eter relay. Catherine McEllig- ott ran a district-best time w hile placing second in the 400 m eters, and the girls' 4x400 relay team ran a season best time and fin ished first. The Mustangs next meet is the Blue Mountain Conference District Meet in Stanfield on Saturday, May 15. Field events begin at 11 a.m. and running events begin at 1 p.m. The top two finishers in each event qual ify for the state track meet, w hich will be held next w eekend in M onm outh. The g irls ’ team is look ing to defend their district team title, and the boys are looking to improve on their fourth place finish from last year. Ander sen (31’ 1” ); Haguewood (29’ 4”). lone Topic Club hosts luncheon for senior girls T he lo n e T opic Club hosted a luncheon for all graduating senior girls, their m other’s and female sta ff m em ber from lone Community School. This is an annual event for the Topic Club and is designed to share the im portance o f education and literacy in the young ladies o f our community. T he lo n e T opic Club is eighty two years old this year. It was formed in 1928 by a g ro u p o f w om en living on farm s north of lone. Eight women got to g eth e r and called themselves the North lone Improvement Club. They had planned meetings each m onth w here they read books and discussed vari ous topics. Their second m eeting each m onth in cluded their husbands and was a social meeting where they played cards and had a good time. Dues the first T h e lo n e H ig h School chapter o f the Na tional Honor Society and the lone Track Team will hold its fifth annual Youth Track and Field Day on Sunday, M ay 16. Events will begin at 2 p.m., rain or shine, on the lone Commu nity School football field. Children ages 0-5 years old and in grades K-5 will compete in the 25- meter dash, 50-meter dash, 100-m eter dash, one-lap run, tennis ball throw, the safety javelin and standing broad jump. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. All proceeds will benefit the Creative Care Preschool. T he T opic C lub had a motto “The more we think, the more we live.” And so the group grew until they limited their member ship to 24. In 1933 they chose the library as some thing badly needed in lone. They have been the sole sponsors o f the city library ever since. The library was h oused around tow n in various stores and building until the city hall was built in 1952 and a large comer room became a permanent home for the library. The lib rary was en larg ed to twice its size in 2006 with a grant from W ildH orse Casino, generous support from the community and a donation o f book shelves from the high school when the school was renovated. Currently, the li brary has a six week read ing program each summer for elem entary students, hosts a preschool visit each month and brings several evening programs in for the public to enjoy. It is open on Monday’s and Wednesday’s from 3-7 p.m. each week. Morrow County School District announces district Math Contest results M orrow C ou n ty School D istrict’s highest achieving m ath students put their math skills to the test at Heppner Elementary School competing in the an nual Mathematics Contest on Thursday, April 22. Students in grades three through eight were selected for the competition based on their best achieve m ent score on the 2009- 10 O reg o n A sse ssm e n t o f Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) math test. Grade level students competed by completing a rigorous 50 question mathematics test. The competition was fierce with few questions separat ing first and tenth place. While students worked on the test, family and friends waited anxiously for the re sults. An awards ceremony was held at the close o f the evening recognizing the results o f the competition.
