Birth Announcement Is a b e l Jo Ann Payne - Petra and Kevin Payne of Heppner announce the birth of a daugh ter, Isabel Jo Ann Payne, on April 2, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Pendle Isabel Jo Ann Payne ton. At birth she weighed eight pounds, nine ounces, and was 203/i inches in length. She joins a sister, Maya, 1 !4 years old. Grandparents are Mary Ann Elguezabal of Hep pner and the late Juan Elguezabal, Les and Kathy Payne of Umatilla, and Phyllis Armitage of Wenatchee, WA. Great-grandmother is Joan Ingram of Nez Perce, ID. Hunter’s education course to be held in June A hunter’s education course will be held June 8, 10, 15 and 17 from 6 - 9 p.m. at Heppner High school with field day on Saturday morning, June 12, at Lexington Gun Club. Any person under 18 who wishes to hunt must pass this course in order to acquire a hunting license in the State of Oregon. Any person wishing to hunt out of state must also hold a valid Hunter Education Card. The course is being taught by Jim and Darlene Marquardt. The cost for the class is $10. St. William Church children receive first communion Four children of St. William Church in lone received their First Holy Communion on Sunday, May 2. The children had pre pared for this event for over a year with the guidance of Eileen McElligott. Parents, grandparents and visitors were present for the event. At the mass, Fr. Gerry Condon spoke of the great significance of this event for the children. Following the mass, there was a reception for all, sponsored by the members of the Altar Society. Delores was bom July 30, 1933 in Baker City to Alva and Rachel (Riley) Wunder. She grew up in Baker City where she graduated from Baker City High School in 1951. She m arried Johnny Jo seph Van Cleave in Baker City in 1952. He passed away in 1987. She moved to Hereford then Alston’s Comer, moving to Bend in 195 5. She later moved back to Hereford in 1980 then to John Day, Heppner and then to Pilot Rock. , She married David McGill on September 6, 1997 in Pilot Rock. She worked for the school district in food ser vice and as a bus driver. She is survived by: her husband, David McGill o f Pilot Rock; son Tim Van Cleave of Pendleton; daughter Jaycee (Janette) Van Cleave of Fresno, CA; brother, Ray Wunder of Nampa, ID; sister Linda Wall of Baker City; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in deatfi by her parents and her husband Johnny Van Cleave. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 6, from 12-5 p.m. and Friday, May 7, from 9-5 p.m. at the fu neral home. Memorial contribu- Betty Anderson, a longtime resident of Pend leton, died Wednesday, April 28,2010 at her home. She was 83 years old. Mass o f Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. in the St. M ary’s Catholic Church in Pendleton. Burial will follow the services in the Olney Cemetery in Pendleton. Mrs. Anderson was bom Mary Elizabeth Cur ran, August 13, 1926 in Pendleton. She was the daughter o f Patrick and Frances (Doherty) Curran. She was raised in Morrow County and North Powder, where she graduated from high school. She married Ralph R. A nderson on August 14, 1948 in Pendleton. The family had lived in John Day before moving to Pendleton in 1957. While here, she had worked at the Pendleton Woolen Mills for 30 years before she retired. She had been an ac tive 60 year member of the St. Mary’ Catholic Church of Pendleton and a member of the Catholic Daughters. She had also been an ac tive volunteer in our com munity, Betty volunteered for many groups including the St. Mary’s Church, St. M ary’ Outreach and the American Red Cross and several others. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling. She was an avid fan of her grandchildren’s sports and activities. Kathleen and David Hartley of Pendleton; seven grand children; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by: her husband; a son Patrick Anderson and daughter-in-law Pamela A nderson-C ourtain; her parents; a sister Katy Mey ers; and a grandson Ryan Anderson. Dorothy Cutsforth Zita Hawkins Dorothy Cutsforth Zita Hawkins, 80, of Herm- iston, died Saturday, May 1, 2010 in Richland, WA. A fam ily graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Fri day, May 7, Dorothy at the Hepp- Cutsforth ner Masonic Zita Cemetery. A Hawkins public cel ebration of life service will be held 3:30 p.m. on Friday at the St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Heppner. She was bom Janu ary 1, 1930 in Heppner, the daughter of Orville and Alta Pettyjohn Cutsforth. She was raised and attended school at Lexington up to the fifth grade. She then attended St. Joseph Acad emy in Pendleton where she graduated in 1947. She graduated from Stevens College in Missouri. It was there that she met Francis Richard Zita. The couple was married on February 12, 1949 at Heppner. They lived at New Britain, Con necticut before moving to Condon and then Beaver ton. They later divorced. On December 3, 1977 she married Robert Hawkins at the Hawkins home on Buttercreek near Echo. It was there that she enjoyed cooking for the harvest crews and helping Bob with his activities. She enjoyed golf and was a member o f the Willow Creek Country Club in Heppner. For a time she wrote for the Gazette-Times in Heppner. Her most en joyable activities involved her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include: her daughters, Debra Zita of Portland, Susan Pearle o f Toronto, Canada, Judy Wodecki o f Little River, South Carolina, and Eliza beth Ashbeck of Echo; sons, Rich Zita of Pendleton and Chris Zita of Echo; step daughters, Terri Sheehe of Beaverton and Melinda Hawkins o f Port Orford, WA; sisters, Vesta Kilkenny of Portland and Fay Olsen of Kennewick, WA; step m other Barbara G ilbert o f Heppner; step-brother Gene Heliker of Pendleton; step-sisters, Lisa Cutsforth o f H eppner and Donna Cutsforth, and 17 grand children. She was preceded in death by: husbands Bob Hawkins and Richard Zita; parents Orville and Alta Cutsforth; brothers Gene Cutsforth, Pat Cutsforth, Orville (Fritz) Cutsforth Jr. and Kenneth Cutsforth; sister Sharon Stookey; step daughter Tammy Hubbard; and step-son Craig Hawk ins. HES Positive Behavior Benefit fundraiser to be Referral Recipients held for 18 month-old A benefit for 18 month-old Remi Robinson will be held on Saturday, May 15. The benefit will be held at Hamley’s Steak House in Pendleton beginning at 6:30 p.m. Remi was diagnosed a brain stem tumor and is cur rently being cared for at Dorenbecher Hospital. The benefit will include a no-host dinner/bar, a silent auction, and live music. There is a $10 door charge and tickets can be purchased in advance at Columbia State Bank and Hamley’s.
