of Umatilla, and Phyllis Armitage of Wenatchee, WA.
Great-grandmother is Joan Ingram of Nez Perce,
ID.
Hunter’s education course
to be held in June
A hunter’s education course will be held June 8,
10, 15 and 17 from 6 - 9 p.m. at Heppner High school
with field day on Saturday morning, June 12, at Lexington
Gun Club.
Any person under 18 who wishes to hunt must
pass this course in order to acquire a hunting license in
the State of Oregon. Any person wishing to hunt out of
state must also hold a valid Hunter Education Card. The
course is being taught by Jim and Darlene Marquardt.
The cost for the class is $10.

St. William Church children
receive first communion
Four children of St. William Church in lone received their First
Holy Communion on Sunday, May 2. The children had pre­
pared for this event for over a year with the guidance of Eileen
McElligott. Parents, grandparents and visitors were present
for the event. At the mass, Fr. Gerry Condon spoke of the great
significance of this event for the children. Following the mass,
there was a reception for all, sponsored by the members of the

City High School in 1951.

seph Van Cleave in Baker
City in 1952. He passed
away in 1987. She moved
to Hereford then Alston’s
Comer, moving to Bend in
195 5. She later moved back
to Hereford in 1980 then
to John Day, Heppner and
then to Pilot Rock.

She married David
McGill on September 6,
1997 in Pilot Rock.
She worked for the
school district in food ser­
vice and as a bus driver.
She is survived by:
her husband, David McGill

Van Cleave of Pendleton;

Van Cleave of Fresno, CA;
brother, Ray Wunder of
Nampa, ID; sister Linda

Mrs. Anderson was
bom Mary Elizabeth Cur­
ran, August 13, 1926 in
Pendleton. She was the
daughter o f Patrick and
Frances (Doherty) Curran.
She was raised in Morrow
County and North Powder,
where she graduated from
high school.
She married Ralph
R. A nderson on August
14, 1948 in Pendleton.
The family had lived in
John Day before moving to
Pendleton in 1957. While
here, she had worked at the
Pendleton Woolen Mills
for 30 years before she
retired.
She had been an ac­
tive 60 year member of the
St. Mary’ Catholic Church
of Pendleton and a member
of the Catholic Daughters.
She had also been an ac­
tive volunteer in our com­
munity, Betty volunteered
for many groups including
the St. Mary’s Church, St.
M ary’ Outreach and the
American Red Cross and
several others. She enjoyed
gardening, cooking and
traveling. She was an avid
fan of her grandchildren’s
sports and activities.

She was preceded

She was bom Janu­
ary 1, 1930 in Heppner, the
daughter of Orville and Alta
Pettyjohn Cutsforth. She
was raised and attended
school at Lexington up to
the fifth grade. She then
attended St. Joseph Acad­
emy in Pendleton where
she graduated in 1947. She
graduated from Stevens
College in Missouri. It was
there that she met Francis
Richard Zita. The couple
was married on February
12, 1949 at Heppner. They
lived at New Britain, Con­
necticut before moving to
Condon and then Beaver­
ton. They later divorced.
On December 3,
1977 she married Robert
Hawkins at the Hawkins
home on Buttercreek near
Echo. It was there that she
enjoyed cooking for the
harvest crews and helping
Bob with his activities.
She enjoyed golf and was
a member o f the Willow
Creek Country Club in
Heppner. For a time she
wrote for the Gazette-Times
in Heppner. Her most en­
joyable activities involved
her family, especially her
grandchildren.

of Portland, Susan Pearle
o f Toronto, Canada, Judy
Wodecki o f Little River,
South Carolina, and Eliza­
beth Ashbeck of Echo; sons,
Rich Zita of Pendleton and
Chris Zita of Echo; step­

A benefit for 18 month-old Remi Robinson will
be held on Saturday, May 15. The benefit will be held at
Hamley’s Steak House in Pendleton beginning at 6:30
p.m. Remi was diagnosed a brain stem tumor and is cur­
rently being cared for at Dorenbecher Hospital.
The benefit will include a no-host dinner/bar, a
silent auction, and live music. There is a $10 door charge
and tickets can be purchased in advance at Columbia State
Bank and Hamley’s.
