Wheeler, whose wife, Sandra, is the daughter of Maria Del Carmen Me dina of Boardman, assigned to Nimitz-class aircraft car rier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) recently departed Haiti after completing humanitar ian assistance operations to victims of the massive 7.0 earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation January 12 . Carl V inson a r rived in the region less than 72 hours after the quake and im m ediately began rendering assistance to approximately 300, 000 injured and an estimate of one million homeless Hai tians. For nearly two weeks, Vinson’s personnel and its embarked 19 helicopters flew more than 2, 200 sor ties, delivering more than 166 tons of food, 89, 000 gallons of water and 38, 700 pounds of medical sup plies to earthquake victims. In addition, Carl Vinson’s helicopters evacuated more than 450 patients to differ ent evacuation sites and the ship’s doctors and corps- men treated 60 patients in the ship’s medical ward. Carl Vinson’s pri mary role in the humani tarian m ission was as a first responder, providing critical airlift and command and control capabilities as the flagship of Task Force 41, the N avy’s sea base supporting Joint Task Force (JFT) Haiti. Prior to departing the devastated region, the Vinson transferred much of its airlift capability, includ ing 10 helicopters, to other units in JFT-Haiti. USS Carl Vinson is currently taking part in Southern Seas 2010 as part o f a scheduled homeport shift to San Diego, CA. HES Parent Teacher Club to host spring luau The Heppner El ementary School Parent Teacher Club is hosting a spring luau in the HES gym from 7-9 p.m. on March 18. All HES families are invited to this free event. Desert Sounds will be providing music spon sored by Wheatland Insur ance and Bank of Eastern Oregon. The PE classes headed up by Mrs. Gen try have been working on hula dances for the occa sion. Numbers will start being called at 6 p.m. The cost is 25 cents per card. “Put on your green, bring some snacks and be ready to say BINGO,” said a spokesperson. Coffee will be provided. Thursday afternoon BINGO will still be held. CAPECO meal programs providing meals for seniors "Speyfest audiences have grown to expect the very best Celtic music around and they were served ample portions from Tiller's Folly, whose high-energy performances had the crowds on their feet shouting for more. If a person is qualified, they are eligible to receive hot and frozen meals delivered to their home each week. These meals are prepared locally each week at the St. Patrick Senior Center kitchen. To be eligible for Home Delivered Meals, a person must be 60 years of age or older and home- bound by reason of injury, illness or an incapacitating disability. Contact Barbara Thomson, Site Coordina tor, at l -800-758-1139 ext. 130 or Judy Buschke at 541 -676-9030 and someone will contact you to help determine their eligibility for the program. There is also a hot meal served each Wednes day at 11:30 at the St. Pat rick Senior Center. This meal is served in a congre gate setting with plenty of time both before and after the meal to visit with your friends. Cost for the meal is a suggested donation of $3.50 and those under age 60 are asked to pay $6 for their meal. Menus for each month are published in the Heppner Gazette-Times or can be obtained by stopping by the Senior Center and picking one up. lone students win at district music competition Two lone students, Eric and Rebecca Jepsen, competed in the District 6 Solo and Ensemble Music Competition held at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande this past weekend on March 6. Eric, a senior, re ceived the top rating in violin for his performance of the Bruch Violin “Con certo in G minor.” Rebecca, a sophomore received the highest rating in harp. She played the “Sacred Dance” Debussy for harp. They w ere accompanied on piano by Myma Van Cleave. In addition, both musicians were selected to advance to the OSAA State Solo Music Champi onships. That contest will take place May l at Linfield College. Kiss Heppner’s Wee LvCfi loi Bit of Blarney Stone Wee’ Hours O’ The Mornin’ Breakfast to be held Saturday The Wee Hours O’The Mornin’ Breakfast will be held at the fire hall on Saturday, March 13, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. The Heppner High School baseball team will be putting it on. Heppner High School exchange student from Amsterdam, Job Dejong will be on Main Street Saturday helping those who dare “ Kiss Heppner's Wee Bit of Blarney Stone” for a donation to raise funds for the St. Patrick’s Celebration Committee. -Photo bv Kav Proctor Alderman graduates from wind turbine school Timothy Alderman of Pendleton graduated from lAHA wind turbine school on Friday, March 5.
