Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - SEVEN Wind, weeds and wildlife topics of MCLG and Morrow SWCD annual Town & country program On Thursday, Janu ary 15, the Morrow County Livestock Growers A sso ciation and Morrow Soil & Water Conserv ation District will sponsor an afternoon of wind, weeds and wildlife at their 22nd annual joint pro gram celebrating town and country in Morrow County. The program is open to the public and will begin at 1 p.m. at St. P atrick’s Catholic Parish Hall in Hep pner. Dennis Newman, Mor row SWCD habitat techni cian, will begin the program with a review o f previous activities and future plans for the Upland Bird Habitat Program. T r a v is S c h u ltz , O D FW D istrict w ild life technician, will present the agency’s Mule Deer Initia tive. Lisa De B ruyckere, coordinator for the Oregon Invasive Species Council, will give a presentation on invasives in Oregon - it’s not just weeds. Carel Dewinkel, Or egon Department o f Energy, w ill provide inform ation on wind energy options for landowners and communi- Annual Holiday Playday held by Four Corners Snowmobile Club The Four C orners Snowmobile club held their annual H oliday Playday at K elly Prairie Sunday, December 28. Many snow mobile enthusiasts and their families were there to enjoy the fresh powder snow on the prairie, the groom ed trails from groom ing ex traordinaire Ron Carlson and the annual poker run that paid out 100% o f the entry fees. A two dollar entry fee and a good running sled around about a 10 mile pok er course gave three lucky snowmobilers a cash return. Mary Jane Heideman took first with a flush, Mike Gor man came away with second sporting a full house, and Amanda Rea took a strong third with three aces. After the poker run, chefs Gene Orwick and Pat Dougherty served hot dogs and chili for the riders to enjoy while they warmed up next to the bon fire. The cost is $20 and the event will be held at the Morrow Coun ty Fairgrounds on Thursday, January 15, to accommodate more seating. The ev en in g w ill begin with a “no host” social hour at 6 p.m. with dinner, entertainment, and presenta tion o f awards starting at 7 p.m. Also, four centerpieces will be available for pur chase by silent auction with the opening bid o f $50. Tim O ’Rourke, an attorney from Pendleton will give an introduction into wind farming and the processes on how to get started. The Morrow SWCD will hold their regular board meeting beginning at 10 a.m. with a brief annual meeting to follow. MCLG will hold their annual meeting at ap proximately 3:30 following the afternoon program. Jean Collins' freshman writing class entered the state Garden Club essay contest. Oregon Wheat Growers League marketing meeting via Polycom scheduled for Thursday The Marketing Com mittee o f the Oregon Wheat Growers League will host the first 2009 M arketing Update via Polycom video conference this Thursday, January 8, at 8 a.m. The marketing meet ings have been a popular monthly event each w in ter. The interactive one-hour sessions provide growers with pertinent data and per sonal help in determining the best avenues to maxi mize their bottom line. This month’s speak er w ill be J e ff K aser o f Mid Columbia Producers, who will provide a quick rev iew o f 2008 markets and a glim pse into 2009 pos sibilities. Oregon East Symphony receives $10,000 from The Collins Foundation The Oregon East Symphony has received a $ 10,000 grant from The Collins Foundation of Portland. Funds from the Foundation will be used to support general operations o f the symphony and chorale. Nikole Morgan Kauffman, 20, was cited for MlP-alco- hol; Miguel Sepulveda, Jr., 28, was cited for Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor; Edson Rafael Torres, 20 was cited for MIP-alcohol; Sean Dan iel Shoemake, 22, was cited for Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor.
