FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 1,2008 lone defeats Condon/Wheeler 44-14 Two and a half shaky minutes in the second quar ter made it close but the lone Cardinals came on strong in the second half to defeat Condon/Wheeler 44-14 last Friday night in Condon. The C ards scored first driving in from their own 24. Cory Peterson had two long runs in the drive and punched in w ith the touchdown on a three yard run with 6:19 left in the first quarter. The point after was no good. Early in the second quarter, the Cards looked poised for another score with a first and 10 on the 12. H ow ever the K night defense held and lone turned the ball over on downs on the C/W six yard line. But Con don/Wheeler had trouble of their own. They lost a yard on first down and were pe nalized half the distance to the goal on second. On third down Clay Morter sacked the quarterback in the end zone for the second time in as many games, scoring a safety and making the score 8-0 in favor o f lone. A fte r th e sa fe ty , C/W punted and the C ar dinals took o v e r on the Knight 47. On the first play from scrimmage, RJ Ramos connected with Clay Morter for a 56 yard touchdow n pass. With the point after good, the Cards were up 16-0. C/W w a sn ’t done though. Pushing through the Cardinal defense, the Knights found the end zone for the first time in the game w ith 2:09 rem aining. With the extra points good, the game was suddenly all too close, 16-14. An extended h alf time for both Condon and Wheeler to introduce their homecoming courts gave the Cardinals time to regroup and refocus. On lone’s first play from scrimmage, Cory Peterson broke free for a 46 yard touchdown run. Alex Rietmann ran in the point after. After short circuit ing a C/W drive, the Cards took over on their own 13 and put together a sustained drive that ended up with Cory Peterson punching in from less than a yard out. On the Cards’ next possession, Cory Peterson broke free for his fourth touchdown o f the day, a 58 yard scamper. Alex Rietmann put the icing on the cake w ith a 54 yard touchdown run with 1:15 remaining in the game. lo n e ta llie d 443 Heppner volleyball team ranked fifth in state yards o f total offense in the game and held the Knights to 170. Cory Peterson led the rushing attack with 245 yards on 20 carries. Alex Rietmann had 52 yards on three carries and Tanner Rietmann had ten carries for 42 yards. Quarterback RJ Ramos was 5-8 in passing for 91 yards. We saw som e incredible blocking on the line that w asn’t there at the beginning o f the season.” Micah Stillman had 18 tackles, 14 o f those as sists. Alex Fetterhoff had 11 with one quarterback sack and Clay Morter had 10 with two quarterback sacks. Alex Rietmann threw in eight. “1 like seeing that our defensive line is doing most o f the tackling,” said Coach Stefani. Next up, the Cards travel to Maupin to take on South Wasco County this Friday at 7 p.m. “It’s start ing to m atter now,” said Stefani as the Cards size up their chances to make the playoffs. Winners announced for WCCC ladies club Eddi Skow Tournament Willow Creek Coun try Club ladies held their club cham pionship/E ddi Skow Tournament on Sep tember 2 and 3. Twelve la dies played 36 holes o f golf to determine the lady’s gross and net champion. The 2008 to u rn a ment winners were Pat Ed- mundson, club champion, and Virginia G rant, Eddi Skow. The play w as set up for special day p riz es on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Three flights were awarded, by handicap, along with special events for each day. Winning in three, the Mustangs won the match 25-16, 25-15, 25-17. On Saturday, September 27, they played at home against Enterprise. It was a tough match with the Mustangs fighting for every point. They prevailed and won the match 25-18, 25-21, 25-15. These matches bring their league record to four wins and one loss. The new coaches poll was published over the weekend and the poll ranks Heppner fifth in the state, one place above Union. On Thursday the girls will meet Stanfield for the first time. This homecoming game will begin at 5 p.m. with the junior varsity team. On Saturday the Mustangs will travel to Enterprise for a rematch with Union and Enterprise.
