It is simple to become an active participant. All one needs to do is to go to the fair office, pick up an exhibitor number and a premium sheet and then take the items to the various departments on Monday, August 11 between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Fruits, vegetables and flowers are accepted Monday 4-8 p.m. and Tuesday morning from 8-10 a.m. Ren'ee Yocom, fair secretary will be happy to an swer any questions. He cites studies by sports psychologist Joan Duda. In one study, Duda tracked 62 athletes at the 2000 O lym pic G am es in Australia. She found that athletes who were coached to m aster their skills and compete to the best of their ability won more m edals than athletes whose coaches focused solely on winning gold. It makes sense: Ath letes perform best when relaxed and confident, not w hen looking over th eir shoulder at a slightly apo plectic coach. T h om pson th in k s a coach can free his or her athletes by erasing fear o f failure. In its place, confi dence and joy take root.
