The Heppner girls’ team p la y e r th e ir th ird co n secu tiv e tim e at E a gle Crest in Redman. The team finished 9lh at the state 4A/3A/2A/1/A cham pion ship tournament. The mus tangs represented the small est school at the tournament all the girls played very well and they finished with their best team score to date a 400 on the final day of play. Scorching temperatures were a problem especially on Friday when the mercury neared 100 degrees, but the athletes coped as best as they could. Kylee Svetich had the best individual performance for lone, coming home with three state medals. She sur prised the field with a runner up finish in the triple jump, sailing 32’10.75 inches on her last jump o f the day, a new PR by over eight inches. As luck would have it, her two individual events were scheduled at almost the same time. She had to check in and then out at the triple jump to go run the finals in the 200. Finishing fifth in the 200, she equaled her PR set the day before in the prelims but reported back to the triple jump with tired legs. “1 started out awful. But then I took a break before the finals and things got better,” she said. A nearby car fire and resulting hubbub provided more distraction but Svetich was determined to finish her high school career on a high note. Morter consistently jumped 5’ 10 this year and cleared 6 ’0 twice in competition, but nothing went right at state.
