Heppner was behind the Knights by nine points going into the half. The girls came out in the third quarter and out scored the knights 12 to 2, giv ing Heppner the lead. Kassey Wilson sank 17, Emily Thomspon scored four and Lindsay Cutsforth, Kaylee Helfrecht, Keshaw- na Talam antes, M ercedes Garrett, and Tori Lovgren all scored two points each, and Brynna Rust sank one for the night. F rid a y ’s gam e in Stanfield had a final score o f 33-26. Tori Lovgren and Keshawna Talamantes each scored six points and had n ine re b o u n d s betw een them. Taighlor Dougherty sunk four for the night and Kassey Wilson, Kaylee Hel frecht and Brynna Rust each scored three for the team. The lone Middle School girls’ basketball team defeated St.M ary’s A cad emy this past Saturday at the Sherman C ounty Tourna ment to earn first place. M ak e n n a R am os and Lacey Thompson were high point scorers with eight points each follow ed by four points from team mates Shadow Kenrick and Mary Rietmann. Jordan Peterson also made her free throw to assist her team to a win. “ It was an enormous team effo rt,” said coach, Erin Heideman. “ I'm extremely proud of the way these girls stepped up to the plate.” These were the last gam es o f the season for lone M iddle School who finished the season with a 14 and 4 record including tournament play. “ We had a great season and our team worked well together,” said team co-captain, Makenna Ramos. “ I will miss playing with this group when I go to Pictured back row (L-R): Jordan Peterson, Becca Jepsen, Mary Rietmann, and Lacey Thompson. Heppner JV boys win 5 of 7 games in last two weeks By Alita Nelson T he H e p p n er JV boys traveled to Enterprise with the Varsity on January 25. The boys came out strong and took the lead the first quarter with a score o f 18-9. By the third quarter the Mustangs were up by 23 points. In the fourth quarter, after letting the Outlaws do a little catching up, Heppner took the win with a final score of 51-36. Dan White led the night with 10 points. Chris Lien, Jordan Hatfield, and Joe Pranger all put in eight p o in ts, and Ian M urray sinking three. Brett Harri son, Alex Pickles and Kyle Fuchs each dropping two points each to help with the Mustang win. The next night Hep pner JV went onto Elgin. Elgin led the game the first quarter by five points. By the half-time buzzer Hep pner had taken over the lead putting the score at Heppner 15 and Elgin 12. By the end o f the gam e Heppner had spread their lead to 13 points, making the final score Heppner 50 and Elgin 37. J o r d a n H a tf ie ld scored 15 for the night and Chris Lien sunk 14. Kyle Fuchs put in six and Dan W hite sank five for the night. Ian Murray had four, and Jared Hedman, Devin Robinson and Alex Pickles each sank two points to help with the Mustang win over the Elgin Huskies. On Friday, February 1, Union made the trip to Heppner. Heppner had the lead all through the game, with a 12 point lead the first quarter, a seven point lead by the half and a five point lead at the end o f the third quarter. Heppner was down by one point with three sec onds left on the clock when Bryan Holland was fouled. Bryan Holland sunk both free throws giving Heppner the win by one, with a final score o f Heppner 43 and Union 42. Joe Pranger led the night with 17 points, Bryan Holland had 10. Chris Lien and Kyle Fuchs each scored four, and Jared Hedman, Alex Pickles, Ian Murray and Devin Robinson each scored two points to help with the Mustang win. On Saturday the JV traveled to W eston-M cE- wen. H ep p n er was not able to take the lead away from Weston-McEvven leav ing a final score o f W-M 46, H eppner 40. Bryan H ol land scored 14 points, Kyle Fuchs sank 10 points, Joe Pranger put in five and Ian Murray had two points and Alex Pickles finished with one point. On the follow ing Tuesday the JV hit the road to battle the Knights at Irri- gon. Heppner took the lead from the start and never looked back. In the first quarter Heppner had 15 and lrrigon 0. By the half-time buzzer H eppner had let lrrigon score to put them at Heppner 17 and lrrigon 13. After the half Heppner came out and stretched their lead to 18 points, putting a final score o f Heppner 40 and lrrigon 22 . Chris Lien led the charge with 11 points, Bryan Holland had eight points. Joe Pranger, Ian Murray, and Devin Robinson each sank five points for the night. Brent Harrison had three points, and Jared Hedman, Kyle Fuchs and Frank Mey er each put in two points to help with the win over the Knights. Heppner then trav eled to Echo to take the w in over the Cougars. The final sco re w as M ustangs 59 Cougars 23. Alex Pickles and Ian Murray led the team with 14 points each and Frank Meyer had 12 points for the night. Jared Hedman sank 10 points. Kyle Fuchs put in five and Brett Harrison and Devin Robinson each sank two points for the win over the Cougars. On Friday, February 8, Heppner went to battle the Stanfield Tigers. Stanfield took the lead early in the game and the mustangs just couldn’t get it back, putting a final score o f Heppner 38 and Stanfield 40. Stanfield had a two point lead in the first quar ter with a score o f HHS 13 Stanfield 15, by the half it was HHS 22 Stanfield 23. Heppner was within one at the end o f the half and was unable to get the lead leav ing a third quarter score of HHS 32 Stanfield 30. Joe Pranger led the team with 10 points and Ian Murray sank nine points for the night. Bryan Holland had six, Kyle Fuchs with five and C hris Lien had three. Brent Harrison and Frank Meyer each scored two points and Alex Pickles had one point for the night. The JV Boys ended the season with a final re cord o f 11-7. Final BMC League record was 10-4. “We started the sea son 1-4 and came back to finish 10-3. The boys really improved individually and as a team during the season. It was a pleasure to coach them, and 1 look forward to their future,” said Coach Grieb. Other p articip atin g clubs were from Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, Yakima, Walla Walla, and Wenatchee. Teams consist o f one or tw o q u izzers in each Awana handbook. Teams with two contestants have the advantage o f having their points added together. Because the three contes tants from Heppner are in different handbooks, they had to compete individually. Each contest began with 10 multiple choice questions from the Bible and Awana handbooks, followed by 10 speed-quizzing questions. It meets every Thursday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church build ing in Heppner. Children in grades K-6 are welcome to attend.
