UMESD Board invites three superintendent candidates to interviews The Board o f D i rectors for the U m atilla- Morrow Education Serv ice District (UMESD) has in vited three candidates for the superintendent position to an interview on February 25. All three candidates have accepted the invitation. The board will inter view the candidates during a closed session on Monday, February 25, at the UMESD. At 4:30 p.m. that day, an open forum with a stake holder’s panel (comprised of VOL. 127 NO. 8 10 Pages Wednesday, February 20, 2008 Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon Flu vaccine still available at Morrow County Health Department The Morrow County Health Department has announced that flu vaccines are still available. There is no cost for the vaccine and shots will be available until the health department's remaining supply runs out. The vaccine shots will be distributed during the department's regular clinic hours and no appointment is necessary. Follow ing the fo rum, there will be a social hour from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the UM ESD. At 6:30 p.m., the Board o f Direc tors will meet in executive session. The board has not yet decided when it will make its final decision on who will fill the superinten dent position. The position became open in April 2007 when former Superintendent George Murdock resigned to take the publisher-editor po sition at the East Oregonian newspaper in Pendleton. The three candidates invited to the interview s include M ichael Lasher, Mark Mulvihill and Connie Kennedy. M ichael Lasher is cu rren tly the C h ie f O p erations O fficer and H u man Resources Director o f the UMESD, where he has worked since 1996. Prior to coming to the UMESD, Lasher was the assistant director o f telecom m uni cations at the U niversity o f Idaho in Moscow from 1993-96. Before that. Lasher w as a network/ systems man ager for North Idaho Col lege in Coeur d'Alene from 1989-93, an administrative program m er at W hitman College in Walla Walla from 1985-89, and a com puter o p e ra to r at ESD 105 in Yakima, WA from 1982-85. Lasher earned his Bachelor o f Science degree in general studies from Lewis Clark State College in Lewiston. ID; a master’s o f science in applied information man agement from the University o f Oregon; and completed his requirements for initial administrative certificate in educational administration at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Mark M ulvihill is currently the deputy super intendent o f the Hermiston School D istrict where he had been employed since 1997. While in Hermiston, Mulvihill has also been an assistant superintendent, di rector of elementary curricu lum, and principal at both Desert View Elementary and Sunset Elementary Schools. Prior to arriving in Hermis ton, Mulvihill was principal o f the junior high school at the Grant School District in John Day from 1995-97. Be fore that, Mulvihill taught at Sherwood and Washington Elementary Schools in the Pendleton School District from 1987-95. M ulvihill earned his bachelor’s de gree in elementary educa tion and master's degree in curriculum and instruction from Eastern Oregon State College in La Grande (now Eastern Oregon University), and received his doctorate in educational leadership from Lew is and Clark College in Portland. Connie Kennedy is the assistant superintendent at the Hood River School District, w here she has been since July 2004. Prior to that, Kennedy was principal o f the ju n io r-sen io r high school in the Rainier School District in Washington from 2003-04, and was also the director o f the special edu cation and curriculum from 2002-03 in that d istrict. Kennedy earned her associ ate’s degree from Mt. Hood Community College and her Bachelor o f Science degree from Portland State U ni versity. She then earned a master's in teaching educa tion and administration from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, and an executive leadership in superintendent preparations from Portland State University. lone superintendent’s contract extended T he lo n e S ch o o l Board on Monday, February 11, extended Superintendent Bryn Brow ning’s contract for two years with an ad ditional year remaining on her previous contract. Schedule of events for St. Patrick’s festivities Thursday, March 13 - “ From C en acle to Calvary,’’ an original play written by Father Condon and original music by Joe Lindsay, will be performed at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Parish Hall. The thick black smoke from the fire could be seen from quiet a dis tance away.
