HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY! Cardinals lose to Echo The lone Cardinals had their chances but let them slip away, losing to Echo last Friday night, 28- 46 on a toe-freezing night in lone. Playing their last home football gam e for the Cardinals were seven seniors; Justin Archer, Kip Krebs, Alan Rietmann, Paul Hams, Kevin Fowler, Dal ton Campbell and Richard Bohna. Echo scored first with 3:11 left in the first quarter and with the extra point good, took a 8-0 lead, lone had a good drive going before turning the ball over on downs. The Cougars then headed downfield and were in the redzone when Justin Archer intercepted an Echo pass in the endzone. The Cards again were moving the ball before stalling and turning the ball over on downs. With 3:36 on the clock in the half, the Cou gars ran in another score. The point after was no good and the Cougars were up 14-0. Echo’s onside kick was scooped up by the Cards and along with a penalty, lone started what turned out to be scoring drive in decent field position on Echo’s 45. As the clock was winding down in the second quarter, the Cardinals hustled down the field and Alan Rietmann busted into the endzone with 20 seconds remaining. Jus tin Archer connected with Kevin Fow ler to put the Cardinals back in striking distance 14-8. Both offenses went to town in the third quarter, lone struck first, receiv ing an o th er onside kick and starting the drive on their own 41. Four minutes burned off the clock as the Cards slugged it out down the field. Quarterback, Justin Archer, hit Clay Morter with a nice sideline pass and the effort was helped along w ith a late hit penalty that moved the Cards into the red zone. Cory Peterson got loose for a ten yard TD run. The point after failed but the score was tied 14-14. It seemed as if the momentum was shifting the C ardinal’s way until less than 30 seconds later. Echo connected on a long TD pass and with the successful extra point. Echo was back on top 22-14. The Cards responded with a little passing magic of their own just 40 seconds later. Archer hit a w ide open Matt Hams for a 55 yard score. The point after was no good but the Cardinals were down by just two, 22-20. The momentum took an Echo turn on the very next play as Echo speedster, Michael Madison, returned the kickoff 80 yards for a score. Then lone hobbled the onside kick. Echo recov ered and in short order, ran in for another score. Trail ing 38-20, the C ardinals started on their own 20 and marched down the field. The first four plays were enough for a first down each time. With 2:13 left in the third quarter, Alan Rietmann ran for his second TD o f the day and with a successful point after pass from RJ Ramos to Matt Hams, lone was within 10, 28-38. Echo fumbled the kickoff return and Junior Luke Bradfield came with a huge recovery. Despite the chilly, breezy night, a good sized crowd turned out for the C ardinal's Hom e co m in g gam e. T he win moved lone’s season record to 5-3, 3-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The Cardinals scored on their first play from scrimmage when Alan Rietmann made a long run for a touchdown. The Car dinals put thirty points on the board in the first quarter while holding the Golden Eagles scoreless and to a total o f -11 yards rushing. Adding 19 additional points to 12 for Nixyawii, the Car dinals took a 49-12 lead at the half. lone am assed 439 yards of rushing in the game, led by Alan Rietmann with 147 yards on five carries and two touchdow ns on the ground. Two other ball car riers tallied more than 100 yards in the contest. Cory Peterson packed the ball six times for 113 yards and one touchdown w hile freshman. Tanner Rietmann also had 113 yards on 10 carries. Paul Hams scored tw ice and fin ished the game with 53 yards on five carriers. A highlight o f the game was Kip Krebs’ first rushing touchdown o f his high school career. Krebs finished the night with 12 rushing yards on 3 carries. Quarterback, Justin Archer connected on five o f his nine pass attem pts for 86 yards and two TD's. Clay Morter ran in with a 55 yarder for the first score of the game and Alan Rietmann had a 17 yard reception for another aerial score. “It was one o f those types of games,” said Coach Dennis Stefani. “Our main squad was dom inant and the young kids got a lot o f playing time. Those games give the younger kids some confidence.” Defensively, the Car dinals were led in tackles by Clay Morter with ten, which included one solo which was a q u arterb ack sack. Matt Coleman had a good effort, tallying nine tackles, two were solo quarterback sacks. Alan Rietman, Gun ner Jessen and RJ Ramos all had seven tackles and Alex Rietmann added five. With a sure fire chance to pull within two, a handoff miscue resulted in a lost fumble within spitting distance o f the goal line, a turnover that broke the C ard's spirit. Echo scored once more in the fourth for the final 46-28 margin. “It was a shootout,” said Coach Dennis Stefani of the game. He noted that the third quarter fumble “was a killer” just when the team had an opportunity to get back within two points. “We had a lot o f momentum right then,” he said. “1 do have to give it to Echo though. They were able to take advantage o f the situation.” Alan Rietmann led the team in rushing with 149 yards on 31 carries. Paul Hams carried the ball 11 times for 62 yards before leaving the gam e w ith a concussion. Cory Peterson had 66 yards on seven car ries and Justin Archer had 18 yards on three carries.
