Cardinals lose to Echo
The lone Cardinals
had their chances but let
them slip away, losing to
Echo last Friday night, 28-
46 on a toe-freezing night
in lone. Playing their last
home football gam e for
the Cardinals were seven
seniors; Justin Archer, Kip
Krebs, Alan Rietmann, Paul
Hams, Kevin Fowler, Dal
ton Campbell and Richard
Bohna.
Echo scored first
with 3:11 left in the first
quarter and with the extra
point good, took a 8-0 lead,
lone had a good drive going
before turning the ball over
on downs. The Cougars then
headed downfield and were
in the redzone when Justin
Archer intercepted an Echo
pass in the endzone. The
Cards again were moving
the ball before stalling and
turning the ball over on
downs. With 3:36 on the
clock in the half, the Cou
gars ran in another score.
The point after was no good
and the Cougars were up
14-0.
Echo’s onside kick
was scooped up by the Cards
and along with a penalty,
lone started what turned out
to be scoring drive in decent
field position on Echo’s 45.
As the clock was winding
down in the second quarter,
the Cardinals hustled down
the field and Alan Rietmann
busted into the endzone with
20 seconds remaining. Jus
tin Archer connected with
Kevin Fow ler to put the
Cardinals back in striking
distance 14-8.
Both offenses went
to town in the third quarter,
lone struck first, receiv
ing an o th er onside kick
and starting the drive on
their own 41. Four minutes
burned off the clock as the
Cards slugged it out down
the field. Quarterback, Justin
Archer, hit Clay Morter with
a nice sideline pass and the
effort was helped along w ith
a late hit penalty that moved
the Cards into the red zone.
Cory Peterson got loose for
a ten yard TD run. The point
after failed but the score was
tied 14-14.
It seemed as if the
momentum was shifting the
C ardinal’s way until less
than 30 seconds later. Echo
connected on a long TD pass
and with the successful extra
point. Echo was back on top
22-14. The Cards responded
with a little passing magic
of their own just 40 seconds
later. Archer hit a w ide open
Matt Hams for a 55 yard
score. The point after was no
good but the Cardinals were
down by just two, 22-20.
The momentum took
an Echo turn on the very
next play as Echo speedster,
Michael Madison, returned
the kickoff 80 yards for a
score. Then lone hobbled
the onside kick. Echo recov
ered and in short order, ran
in for another score. Trail
ing 38-20, the C ardinals
started on their own 20 and
marched down the field. The
first four plays were enough
for a first down each time.
With 2:13 left in the third
quarter, Alan Rietmann ran
for his second TD o f the
day and with a successful
point after pass from RJ
Ramos to Matt Hams, lone
was within 10, 28-38. Echo
fumbled the kickoff return
and Junior Luke Bradfield
came with a huge recovery.

squad was dom inant and
the young kids got a lot o f
playing time. Those games
give the younger kids some
confidence.”
Defensively, the Car

C ard's spirit. Echo scored
once more in the fourth for
the final 46-28 margin.
“It was a shootout,”
said Coach Dennis Stefani of
the game. He noted that the
third quarter fumble “was a
killer” just when the team
had an opportunity to get
back within two points. “We
had a lot o f momentum right

give it to Echo though. They
were able to take advantage
