Ryan Miller gave a presentation to the council in his bid to pick up the fran chise saying his company had the expertise, resources and manpower to do the job. Without the franchise Miller would not have been able to operate in the city limits o f Heppner. Miller said his com pany deserved the franchise because they had truck re pair facilities, an office staff and experience in business. Neighborhood Center, HES canned food drive held unes VOL. 126 NO. 41 10 Pages Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Morrow County, Heppner, Oregon Attorney general candidate makes campaign swing through Heppner John Kroger, Demo crat candidate for Oregon attorney general, stopped in Heppner October 4 on a campaign sw ing through the state. “ It’s important for me to travel the whole state and meet with people all over Oregon,’’ said Kroger. This trip would make the second time he has visited Hepp ner. He said he first came to Oregon on a cross-country bike trip, fell in love w ith the state and moved here. K roger has taught criminal law and legal phi losophy at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland since 2002. “There is no bet ter job than teaching young lawyers,” he said. Kroger has twice won the Levenson award for teaching excel lence, awarded by the Lew is John Kroger & Clark graduating class. Kroger grew up in Houston, Texas, the fourth of six children to parents who ran a music store. He says he played piano and saxophone prior to a hand injury. When he turned 17 he left Texas to join the Marines, serving in Central America and the Pa cific. “ The Marines taught me that some things are so important, they are worth fighting for. We all have a duty to make our nation and our community stronger and safer. I will put those values to work as your attorney general,” says Kroger. After his discharge from the Marines, Kroger worked his way through col lege with the help o f the G1 bill. He graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School. Prior to becoming a prosecutor, he worked as an economic and domestic pol icy advisor to President Bill Clinton, whom he met with often. He says that Clinton has a magnetic personality. We arc appre ciative of our community for The Morrow County School B oard heard the results o f the Oregon State school report cards at the MCSD regular meeting held at Sam Boardman Elemen tary School in Boardman Monday evening. Heppner II igh School and Heppner Elem entary School each receiv ed an “ex ceptional” statewide rating. A.C. Houghton Elementary School in Irrigon. Irrigon Elementary, Irrigon High School and Riverside High School in Boardman earned “ strong" ratings and Sam Boardman Elementary and Windy River Elementary in Boardman earned “satisfac tory” ratings. MCSD Super intendent Mark Burrow s told the board that “ 100 MONDAYS AT 5:00 P.M. percent o f MCSD schools w ere satisfactory, 75 percent were better than good and 25 percent were exceptional.” Burrows said he was proud o f the results and remarked, “The rednecks from Mor row County are doing just fine.” He credited teachers and administrators for their commitment to education. Burrows said only 14% of schools statewide were ex ceptional. A ssistant Superin tendent Phyllis Danielson presented a report to the board on statewide testing.
