Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 4,2007 - FIVE Mustangs J Vs open season with win By Rick Paullus Taking advantage of 12 walks and two hit batters, the Heppner M ustang JV baseball team opened the year with a 19-2 win over the Weston-McEwen Tigerscots on Thursday, March 22, in Athena. The Mustangs will be back on the field with a d o u b leh ead er against Condon-Wheeler on Friday, April 6, at 2 p.m. The M ustangs put four runs on the board in the first without a base hit as they made good use of three walks, a hit batter, an error and two passed balls. After the Tigerscots scored a run in the bottom half, the Mustangs came back with four more in the second, getting two more walks, two errors and an rbi single from Sam King. They added three more in the third as Keenan Jack singled and Wacy Coil scored two with a double. Four more were scored in the fourth as they capitalized on Five walks and two errors By Kick Paullus to make the score 15-1. In the fifth, Quinn Chick and Chris Lien walked, Jared H uddleston singled. Coil scored tw o more with a single and Josh Shank had an rbi single. H u dd lesto n w ent two innings, striking out six and giving up one run. Shank went two perfect innings, striking out four, and Lien finished up, allowing one unearned run. Coil went 2 for 3, with five rbi, and scored three times. King went 1 for 2 with two rbi. Lien walked four times and scored five runs. H uddleston scored four runs, Shank had two rbi and Chick scored twice. Mustang JVs rally for 11-4 win over Rockets By Rick Paullus After trailing 3-2 in the th ird , the H eppner Mustang JV baseball team came back for an 11-4 win over the visiting Pilot Rock Rockets on Monday, April 2. The Mustangs, now 2-0 on the year, have a d o u b le h ea d e r at hom e against Condon-Wheeler on Friday, April 6, beginning at 2 p.m ., before going to R iverside for a game on Monday, April 9, at 4:30 p.m. The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the first wHeri Chris Lien reached on an error and came around to score on a single by Bryan Holland. After the Rockets tied it in the top of the second, the Mustangs came back with a run in the bottom half when Drew Johnson singled, moved to second on a bunt by Keenan Jack, and scored on a single by Mark McCabe. The Rockets scored two runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but the Mustangs again tied it when Lien singled and scored on a double by Jared Huddleston. They took the lead in the fourth when McCabe led off with a double, went to third on a bunt by Quinn Chick and scored on a fielder’s choice by Lien. Huddleston walked, stole second and Cub Scout Pack 661 to hold Pinewood Derby races Mustangs split in Colfax scored on a sin g le by H olland w ho ended up scoring on a wild pitch. The Mustangs added five more in the fifth when, w ith two outs, M cC abe reached on a fielder’s choice. Chick singled. Lien reached on an e rro r to score M cC abe, H uddleston reached on an error to score C hick, H olland doubled home a run and Sam King had an rbi single to make it 11-4. Johnson went four irtnings, striking out nine, allowing three hits, one walk and tw o earn ed runs. Huddleston went the final three innings, striking out seven, walking one, gave up one hit and one earned run. Holland went 3 for 4 with three rbi and scored twice. McCabe went 2 for 4, scoring twice. After dropping a 10- 4 decision to the Freeman Scotties on Friday, March 30, the Heppner Mustangs came back to take an 8-7 win over the Colfax Bulldogs on S atu rd ay , M arch 31, in C olfax, W ashington. The M ustangs, now 3 and 3 o v e ra ll, and 2 and 0 in league, get back into league play on Saturday, April 7, with a doubleheader at home against Irrigon beginning at 11 a.m., and at Sherman on Tuesday, April 11. The Mustangs dug themselves into a big hole against Freem an, falling behind 8-0 after three innings before they finally got on the board in the top of the fourth w hen N athan K ennedy doubled, Wacy Coil singled and Josh Shank had an rbi single. They got back into the game in the sixth when Coil singled. Bryan Holland scored him with a double. Chance Day had an infield sin g le and Q uinn Peck scored two with a double to make it 8-4. The Scotties answered with two more in the bottom half however, and took the win. Peck ended up going 3 for 3 with two doubles and two rbi. Coil went 3 for 4, Kennedy went 2 for 3 with a double, and Shank went 2 for 2. The Mustangs out-hit Freeman 14-9, but gave up seven walks and hit two batters. The next day against C o lfax , the M ustangs managed just one hit and trailed 2-0 through four innings before they got the bats going. Drew Johnson and Coil both singled. Day hit into a fielder’s choice, Colton Hanson had an rbi single. Peck reached on an error, Andre Rauch scored tw o w ith a sin g le and Holland scored two more with a single to make it 5-2. Heppner added what proved to be three very important runs in the seventh when N acho Elguezabal reached on a fielder’s choice w ith tw o out, H olland singled, Justin Archer had an rbi single. Coil walked and Shank scored two more in a single to make it 8-2. The Mustangs held on then as the Bulldogs came back to get within one and had runners on first and second, but Day got a pop up to Coil at catcher to end the game. Holland went 2 for 2 with two rbi, Rauch sent 2 for 3 with two rbi. Shank went 1 for 2 with two rbi, and Archer went 1 for 1 with an rbi. W r a n g le r P la y 10th annual golf Day season to get scram ble to benefit golf team underw ay The 10th A nnual Willow Creek Three-M an S cram ble w ill be held Sunday, A pril 15, at the Willow Creek Country Club in Heppner. The Heppner/ lone high school g o lf program will sponsor the event and proceeds will benefit the program. The scramble is open to the first 27 teams. Tee time is 9 a.m. C ost for the tournament is $35 per player. Prizes will be awarded for first through third place, net and gross, KP and long putt. Tee prizes will be awarded for every hole. Everyone is invited to join in the 2007 Wranglers Riding Club Play Days on April 22 and 29 and May 6 and 13. Each week contes tants will compete in the stick horse race, barrels, poles and a changing third event. Family members are invited to a pot luck dinner at noon before the the day's events begin with the stick horse race at 1 p.m. A meeting will be held at 12:15 p.m. on the first play day. C ontestants must attend three play days to re ceive awards. Awards will be given on May 13 after the Mother’s Day barbecue and play day. Membership dues are $40 per family. $30 for a single or $5 for a one-day pass. HEARING AID SA s395 Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts from Heppner and Lexington will be racing their homemade pinewood derby cars this Saturday, April 7, starting at 10 a.m., at the Heppner Elementary School gym. The public is invited to come and watch the races. The Pinewood Derby is an annual event o f Cub Scouts. It is the most popular event for many Scouts and is probably the best know n Scouting event among non-Scouts. Each Scout is given a block of wood made of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight, usually five ounces, must not exceed a certain length and must fit on the track. Other than the basic design rules, the Cub Scout is able to carve and decorate the car as he chooses. The first Pinewood Derby was held on May 15, 1953, in Manhattan Beach. California. Everyone is invited to help the Scouts celebrate 53 years of races. There is no cost for this event. For more information contact Susan Thompson, Cubmaster at 676-5350. MC Gun Club news Twelve shooters en joyed the w eather during shooting on March 4. Deona Hodges and Rob A shbeck topped all shooters in the singles, with scores of 21. Second went to Mark Schlichting with 20 and Roger Mortimore had 19 for third. Junior shooters Tyrel Walker and Treston Maben improved that week with good scores of 14 for Tyrel and 13 for Treston. One 22-yard handi cap was shot, with Dick Goodhead and Rob Ashbeck both hitting 18. Nate Camp bell busted 16. Three Annies were shot, with Richard Campbell.
