FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 28,2007 Mustang girls hold off Cobras 63-51 to advance to second round of state B> Kick Paullus T he H eppner M ustang g irl’s basketball team almost let a 12-point third quarter lead slip away, but hit 8-10 free throws in the final 1:18 to hold off the visiting Central Linn Cobras 63-51 on Saturday, February 24, in the first round of the Les S chw ab/U S Bank O SA A C lass 2A state tournament. The Mustangs, now 21-3, will advance to the final eig h t at the P en d leto n C on v en tio n C en ter and w ill play Nestucca, the number two seed from the N orthw est L eague at 1:30 p.m . on T h ursday, M arch 1. Nestucca beat Lakeview 41 - 30 on Saturday to advance to Pendleton. The M ustangs fell behind 3-0 early but finally got going w hen A ftan Betsinger completed a three- point play and Megan Orr scored on a pass from Lyndi Patton. The team s traded b a sk e ts then as K atie Kilkenny fed Orr for a lay up to m ake it 7-7. The M ustangs then went on a little run when Kilkenny hit a short jumper, Orr hit two free throw s and then fed Amber Patton for a lay-up to make it 13-7. Regi Seitz scored off a rebound as the Mustangs would eventually take a 15-11 lead after one. They went on a 9-0 run to start the second as Taylor Kempas hit one of two free throws and then fed Amber Patton for a lay-up, ¿Ql>7 < >:-> A A U b L* Set ? n. , .‘ A !!•.*!• Sf.«h r UNO» Patton hit two free throws and Orr had back-to-back steals and lay-ups to make it 24-11. The Cobras cut the lead to five before Seitz scored off a rebound and hit a three-pointer to make it 29-19. Seitz hit a running jum per and a long three- pointer as the Mustangs took a 34-25 lead at the half. The M ustangs stretched their lead to 39-17 early in the third as Betsinger scored off a drive, hit one of tw o free throw s and Kilkenny scored off a pass from Orr. The Cobras came back with an 8-0 run before Seitz hit a three-pointer to make it 42-35. Lyndi Patton hit a three-pointer as the Mustangs took a 45-40 lead into the fourth quarter. After a Cobra basket to open the fourth, Betsinger scored twice inside to make it 49-42 but they came back to get within two before the M ustangs w ould put the game out of reach. Kilkenny scored off a rebound, Lyndi Patton hit three of four free throws, Orr hit two more, and Seitz hit one of two to make it 59-49 with :32.5 left. After a Cobra basket, Orr hit two more free throws and B etsin g er sco red o ff a rebound ju s t b efo re the b u zzer to clo se out the scoring. S eitz led three Mustangs in double figures w ith 16 p o in ts, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists. The Loggers By Rick Paullus The H eppner M ustang boy’s basketball team had their season come to an end at K nappa on Friday, February 23, by a score of 84-67 in the first round of the Les Schwab/US Bank OSAA Class 2A state tournament. The Mustangs, co ach ed by F orest M cK innis, fin ish ed the season with a 14-11 record and said goodbye to seniors RJ Farrens, Aaron Allstott, Tony H aguew ood, Justin D elv eau x , and B rendan McElligott. The M ustangs trailed just 17-14 after one, getting four points each from F a rren s, D elveaux, and •> outscored the Mustangs 29- 19 in the second, as Nacho E lguezabal scored eight points, Jared Huddleston hit tw o th re e -p o in te rs and Farrens one, and took a 46- 33 lead at the half. Elguezabal had eight more points, Rauch five, and H u ddlesto n hit an o th er th ree, but the L oggers stretched their lead to 69-51 a fte r th ree q u a rte rs. McElligott had five points, including a three-pointer, Allstott had four points, and Farrens hit a three-pointer in the fourth but the Loggers kept their lead and took the win.
