SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 14,2007 Mustang boys rally for win over Tigers By Kick Paullus After falling behind by 10 points in the first q u a rte r, the H ep p n er Mustang boys rallied for a 67-52 win over the visiting Stanfield Tigers on Friday, F eb ru ary 9, in B lue Mountain Conference play on se n io r n ig h t. The Mustangs, 9-5 in the BMC and 13-9 overall, ended up tied w ith Pilot Rock for second place in the BMC. The Mustangs will play the Rockets on Friday, February 16, in district tournament in Pendleton at around 3 p.m. with the winner facing Union on Saturday night for the district championship. The loser will play on Saturday afternoon to determine the third and fourth seeds into the state tournament. Elguezabal scored off a pass from Farrens and Lane Bailey scored off a pass from Matt McCabe but the Tigers built an 18-8 lead. Delveaux fed Elguezabal and McCabe for lay-ups and Andre Rauch scored after a steal to close out the first quarter with the Tigers leading 18-14. After a Tiger three- pointer, Elguezabal scored five straig h t po in ts and Rauch scored off a pass from Farrens to make it 61-48 with 3:40 left. After a Tiger bucket, the Mustangs put the game away as Elguezabal scored tw ice inside and Rauch scored off a pass from Farrens. Elguezabal led the M ustangs with 26 points, four reb o u n d s and two blocked shots with Rauch added 16 p o in ts, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots. Farrens had nine assists and five rebounds, Delveaux had four rebounds, three assists and two steals, McCabe had five assists and five steals, and Bailey had nine points, two assists, and two steals. Lisa Rietman has agreed to help the club with grant applications once the plan is approved. Superintendent Browning stated the football bleachers are being inspected and may need to be replaced, Funding for that project may be added to the weight room grant applications. The club voted to provide the team with $ 100 per day of district and state competition for help with expenses throughout the playoffs. Club members also approved providing a charter bus for any regional Mustang JV girls win two more to end season We Print Business Cards Now a member o f Cardinal Booster Club holds meeting Pear Shaped Amethyst Colored Stone Set In A Sterling Mounting The Heppner Mustang JV girls ended their 2006- 2007 basketball season with a win at Irrigon on Tuesday, February 6, by a score of 37-28 and a win at home against the Stanfield Tigers 46-12 on Friday, February 9. The Mustangs, coached by Chris Rauch, ended up with an 18- 2 record. Emily Thompson had four points and Brynna Rust three as the Mustangs held a 9-6 lead over Irrigon after one but blanked the Knights in the second taking an 18-6 lead at the half. Catherine McElligott had six points in the third as they led 28-14 after three and Kaylee Helfrecht had three points in the fourth as they took the nine-point win. McElligott led the Mustangs with 10 points with Thompson and Erin Price each adding four points. The Tigers held an 8-7 lead after one despite four points from McElligott but came back to take an 18-10 lead at the half as Mercedes Garrett had four points and Rust hit a three-pointer in the second. Sarah Milner had six points and McElligott four as they put the game away in the third, increasing their lead to 37-10. The blanked the Tigers in the fourth to take the win. M cE lligott finished with eight p o in ts, four rebounds, and three steals with Milner adding six points and three steals. Kristen Van Cleave had six points and two steals, Kelsie Fox had 10 rebounds, Melissa West had four steals and three assists. Price had four steals and two assists, Jessica Hughes had three steals and two assists. Rust had six steals, Maggie Armato had five rebounds and Kassi Wilson had two steals.
