Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 14,2007 - FIVE Mustang girls take down Tigers Mustang JV boys end season with two wins By Rick Paullus With two easy wins, the Heppner M ustang JV boys wrapped up their 2006- 2007 basketball season. The Mustangs, coached by Ken Grieb, ended up with a 16-4 record by winning at Irrigon 57-5 on Tuesday, February 6, and at hom e ag ain st Stanfield 61-32 on Friday, February 9. At Irrig o n , the Mustangs took a 10-0 lead after one and got six points from Sam King and five each from Daulton Wellman and Bryan Holland in the second as they increased it to 31-2 at the half. King had six more in the third as they extended their lead to 47-3 and Chris Lien added five points in the fourth to seal the win. King ended up with 14 points w ith W ellman adding 11 points, Holland nine and Jason Houweling had six points. T he M ustangs jum ped out to a big lead early against the Tigers, getting six points from King and four from W ellm an, taking a 16-3 lead after one. Jordan Hatfield put up four points in the second as they took a 26-8 lead at the half. King and Braden Britt each had six points in the third as they increased their lead to 4 8 -2 0 a fte r th ree. B ritt added six more in the fourth. B ritt led the Mustangs in double figures with 14 points. King added 12 points and Holland had 10 . By Kick Paullus Cardinals take loss on the road The lone Cardinals fell to the Condon-Wheeler K nights on Tuesday, February 6 at Fossil 45-66. The Cardinals stayed close in the first quarter as the teams were tied at 12. But after that, it was all Condon-Wheeler, with the Cards down 31-21 at the half and 32-45 after three. The C ards looked tired and disorganized, racking up 27 turnovers in the contest. They also struggled with their shooting percentage, hitting just 27% from the floor. Paul Hams was the only C ardinal in double figures with 12 points. Also scoring for lone was Matt Hams with nine, Kip Krebs with seven, Justin Archer, K evin F ow ler and A lan Rietmann with five each and William Wehrli with two. One bright spot was the rebounding effort. The C ards out-rebounded the Knights 34-26, led by Justin Archer with nine. The Mustangs, 13-1 in the BMC and 19- 3 overall, took first place and will play for the district championship at Pendleton on Saturday, February 17, at 6 p.m. Lyndi Patton, Amber Patton, Sarah Price, and Regi Seitz were the four seniors who played their last regular season home game for the Mustangs. Lyndi Patton gave the Mustangs an early 4-2 lead on a long jumper and a lay-up from Seitz but the Tigers came back to take a 6-4 lead. The lead was short-lived though as Seitz hit two free throws, Megan Orr came up with two steals and lay-ups, and Amber Patton hit two free throws to make it 12-6. Amber Patton scored off a drive and Lyndi Patton scored off a pass from Orr to close out the first with a 16-8 lead. The Tigers scored the first four points of the second but Seitz scored off a pass from Aftan Betsinger and Lyndi Patton hit two free throws. Price scored off a pass from Amber Patton and off a drive as the Mustangs took a 24- 16 lead at the half. The Mustangs came out hot to start the third as Seitz scored of a pass from Lyndi Patton, Amber Patton hit one of two free throws and Seitz scored twice off passes from Orr to make it 31 -16. The Tigers came back with a 9- 1 run before Betsinger scored inside to make it 34-25 after three. Katie Kilkenny hit a short jumper and Lyndi Patton scored off a pass from Orr but the Tigers got to within eight before Seitz scored inside. Price hit one of two free throws and Lyndi Patton and Orr each hit two free throws to push it to 45-30. Amber Patton scored off a pass from Lyndi Patton and hit one of two free throws and Kristen Van Cleave scored off a pass from Lyndi Patton and hit one of two throws to close out the scoring for the Mustangs. Seitz finished with 12 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists and Lyndi Patton had 12 points and three assists. Amber Patton had eight points, four rebounds, and four steals, Orr had five rebounds, four assists and three steals, Price had two rebounds, Kilkenny had two assists and Sherilyn Peck had two steals.
