Heppner City Manager's Notes (Editor’ s note: The follow ing article was submitted by Heppner City Manager David DeMayo.) Sewer Woes W ould you believe that adults, who are supposed to know better, do dumb things like flushing disposable diapers, feminine napkins, paper towels and so forth down their toilets? Yes believe or not. there are people in Heppner that do this very thing! H ow do 1 know this you ask? Because all this stuff that doesn’ t belong in the sewer system shows up in the inflow at our sewer plant. A ll this stuff, unless it is removed, clogs pumps and valves and raises all kinds o f havoc. The system we have to remove this stuff is a gymnasium basket, like you store your clothes in at the local swim m ing pool. And the baskets must be changed about every four-six hours, depending on what happens to be in the water. As you are w ell aware of, the square holes in these baskets are pretty big, so a lot o f “ stuff’ gets through them. Needless to say, something needs to be done to remedy this situation. It would be nice, but highly unlikely, that people would stop dumping all this crud into the sewer system. There is a filter/grinder system that can be installed at our plant that could help address this issue: cost-$59,0(X), plus installation, plus landfill fees to dispose o f this stuff. W hen people scream about what it costs to run a sewer plant, they forget that their conduct is one o f the causes for our expenses. Food for thought.
