P h o to b> John B ristow H eppner and lone Fire Departments responded to a tractor fire at Monte Crum's ranch on Ella Road near lone on Tuesday, Oct. 10 . Steve Ball, a ranch hand for Crum Ranches, was in the process of planting when he noticed flam es coming up from under the tractor. He quickly got off the tractor and ran to his home, which is about 1/8 mile from where he was working and called in the fire. Wayne Rietmann, who lives across the road from the field, also spotted the fire and made a call to the fire department. Heppner and lone fire departments responded to the scene and put out the fire. H ow ever, the fire restarted Wednesday, Oct. 11 and had to be put out again. No land was dam aged in the fire; however, it is believed that a no-till drill attached to the tractor was damaged. All schools showed significant growth in many areas w hile two schools earn ed the p re stig io u s “exceptional” school rating. During the 2005-06 school year the M orrow C ounty School D istrict B oard of D irecto rs, administrative team and staff set lofty performance goals for all of their students. The goal read that, “Each student will achieve annual reading and m ath R1T gains prescribed by Oregon State grade level standards. Each student, a grade level or more deficient in reading a n d /o r m ath sk ills, w ill achieve RIT gains sufficient to ach iev e the stan d ard within three years.” It is o b v io u s from the outstanding perform ance and growth shown on the state rep o rts that the implementation of this goal played a significant role in positively impacting student performance. Heppner Elementary and AC H oughton Elementary joined the elite crowd of schools that earned Satisfactory Will be rated 07/08 Exceptional Will be rated 07/08 Will be rated 07/08 Exceptional Strong the prestigious “exceptional" school rating. In both schools, reading scores soared into the upper 90th percentile followed close by w ith o u tsta n d in g m athem atics results well above the state average. Sim ilarly, H eppner Jr/Sr High School was one of only 42 schools in the state to earn an impressive “strong” rating with an 18 percent im provem ent in reading sco res w hile h olding m ath em atics re su lts 12 p ercent above the state average. Across the district other schools were equally as im p ressiv e. At Sam B oardm an E lem en tary (rated Satisfactory), reading scores came in at 94 percent, 10 percent above sim ilar schools and 4 percent above the state av erag e. M ath em atics sco res ap p ro ach ed the 90th p e rc e n tile , w ell above comparison schools at 83 p ercen t. W indy R iver E lem en tary (rated Satisfactory), Boardman's 5th and 6th grade school (c u rre n tly 4 th -6 th ) also show ed n o tab le performance. Oct. 17, along Bombing Range Road in M orrow C ounty, Undersheriff Steve Myren stumbled upon a car on the side o f the road. The driver eventually traveled through a fence and ended up in a field where he was apprehended. He also had outstanding Umatilla County warrants. He was lodged at U m atilla C ounty Jail on $38.000 bail. The bride-elect is a 2001 graduate of lone High School and a 2005 graduate of University of Montana- Western. She is currently the technology operations manager for the Bend-LaPine School District. The groom-elect is a 2000 graduate of Crook County High School and a 2005 graduate of Oregon State University. He graduated in 2006 with his m aster's in education from Eastern Oregon University. However, the lack of rating didn’t keep Riverside from making stellar performance grow ths. Reading scores grew by 20 percent and math sco res by 32 p ercen t, outperforming comparison schools and surrounding districts in the region. The rem ain in g Irrigon schools of Irrigon Elementary and Irrigon Jr/Sr High School likewise are in their third and final year of transition without receiving a ratin g . At Irrig o n Elementary School (5th-6th grades), scores rose by 31 percent in reading and 18 percent in m ath em atics, outperforming comparison schools by 17 percent and 9 p ercent resp ectiv ely . He was sentenced to 24 months formal probation and payment of $2513 in fines and fees and was barred from M orrow C ounty G rain Growers and Heppner and Lexington school property. Jam es K enneth Ellison admitted to violation of probation allegations for Possession of a Controlled Substance. His probation was revoked and reinstated and he was sentenced to five days in jail and given a six- m onth e x ten sio n on his probation from the original ex p iratio n date. He was convicted of a second count of the same crime and was sentenced to five days in jail and an e x ten sio n o f six months on his probation from the original expiration date, to run consecutively to the other sentence. R onald G ene Beagles was convicted of Harassment Physical +. a Class B misdemeanor. He was sen ten ced to 90 suspended days in jail, one year bench probation and payment of $ 133 in fines and fees.
