Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon OWGL representatives tour wheat marketing and port facilities Heppner Booster Club to host steak feed and auction The Oregon Wheat Growers League Board of D irectors traveled to the Portland area on Sept. 6 to experience the route wheat takes once it leaves the co u n try grain elev ato r. OW GL M em bership Committee Chair Shannon Rust attended. The group first traveled to the Albers Mill Building in Portland, which houses the offices of the W heat M arketing Center, US Wheat Associates and the O regon W heat Commission. D avid S h elto n , Executive Director of the W heat M arketing C enter demonstrated for the group the same dough-testing and noodle-making equipment used to market US Wheat to overseas buyers. Up on the sixth floor of the building, Ian Flagg w elcom ed the group to the office of the US W heat A sso ciates W est Coast office, followed by a brief visit to the Oregon Wheat Commission office. Each stop was informative and e n lig h te n in g as the various aspects of the wheat industry were explained. T he H ep p n er Booster Club will be holding a steak feed and auction on Saturday, O ct. 14 at the Heppner Elks Lodge. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m., with the auction starting at 8 p.m. Tickets are on sale for the dinner at Hollomon’s and MCGG. Growers watched as wheat was transferred from rail cars to the terminal elevators, visited the grain-cleaning facility; and watched again as grain was being loaded onto a ship headed overseas. The final stop, Terminal 6 at the Port of P o rtlan d , in clu d ed an informative presentation and tour of the port facility by John Akre. T he B oard of Directors and six OWGL co m m ittees met the following day in Portland for regular quarterly meetings, fe a tu rin g sp eak ers who presented on crop insurance, transportation, renewable fuels, and air quality issues. Flagg of USW Associates and Raleigh Curtis of MCP were the featured luncheon speakers. Wheat producers in M orrow C ounty are encouraged to attend the annual fall m eeting and dinner scheduled for Nov. 1 in Heppner. Heppner Garden Club to host district meeting H eppner G arden Club will be hosting the district meeting for the Blue Mountain District on Oct. 14. It will be held at St. P atrick 's C atholic parish hall. The luncheon, to be held at noon, will cost $7.50. Public is invited and the doors will be open at 9 a.m. w ith coffee and snacks. There will be a Treasure C hest and Country Store available to buy inexpensive items. T here w ill be a Fundraiser to be held at homecoming game A Harvest Breakfast fu n d ra ise r w ill be held Friday, Sept. 29 during the H eppner H igh School homecoming football game. Serving o f the meal will begin at 4 p.m. The menu in clu d es p an cak es, hashbrowns and ham and eggs. Cost is $7 per person. Monies raised from this event will go to fund a new score board. H ep p n er G arden Club will hold its regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Senior Center. The meeting will be planning the district meeting. H ostesses for the O ct, 2 m eeting w ill be Jeanette Padberg and Peggy Connor. Boardman Quilt Show to be held Boardman Quilters will hold their quilt show S aturday, O ct. 7 at G reen field G range in B oardm an, 209 NW l sl Street, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vendors and sewing machine demonstrations will be present, along with a featured quilter(s). Food will be available. It is not to late to enter a quilt(s). You can do so by contacting Sharon M ailloux at 481-2653 or Dorothy Tyron at 481 -3993. These ladies will be glad to answer any questions you may have. and dessert. Lee Ansotegui and crew will be the bar-b- quers. Ken Grieb will be the auctioneer for the evening. Along with the auction, there will also be a silent auction, penny board and raffle. The booster club is currently soliciting goods and services to be auction. If you have a donation for the auction, call 676-9041. Historical Society to hold annual meeting Boardman. The Morrow County Historical Society will hold th e ir annual m eetin g at S tokes L anding S en io r Center in Irrigon on Sunday, Oct. 1. The meeting will begin with a potluck dinner at 1 p.m., with the meeting to begin at 2:30 p.m. The m eeting w ill include special music from LaVelle Partlow and a video p re sen ta tio n o f “ H igher Ground,” a documentary on Those attending the meal are asked to bring a salad, dessert or hot dish. The historical society will be providing turkey, dressing, potatoes and gravy and rolls. M em bers are reminded that their $5 dues are due. Dues for the Oregon State Historical Society are $55 per person or $75 per family, which represents two adults with children under age 18. Heppner road revisions to begin Sept. 28 Beginning Sept. 28, the traffic flow to and from Heppner High School will be changing. The changes will be as follows: Spruce Lane will become a one-way street leading up to the school and Morgan Street will become a one-way street leading down from the school to the base of the hill, where it will revert to a two-way street near Christian Life Center. This change in traffic How is designed to promote safety and to allow a smoother flow of traffic for everyone involved. S e p t. 18: M CSO received a report that a caller from Heppner advised that her elderly sick dog was suffering and her grandson was going to put it down with a .22. The reporter later called back and changed her mind and was going to take the dog to the vet. -MCSO received a report that a rep o rter in Irrigon was having problems with her n eighbor's dogs going to the bathroom in her yard. She also reported that the neighbor's 7-foot boa was missing. -MCSO received a report that a semi lost its tire and sparks shot off the rim and started a grass fire in Boardman.
