This free, public program will take place on Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman Library. It’s one thing to listen to lectures on history; it’s entirely another to hold history in your hand. That is the beauty of coins. They chronicle the birth and death o f nations, their trade, econom ic cycles and the brutality o f war and hard times. On a more personal level, coins have been used for gloating, insults, personal ambition and even death threats.. Coins present a fascinating look into the intrigue of political forces and the expansion and clash of cultures. Doug R ic e ’s program traces 2200 years of coinage from pre-Roman Spanish mintages to the introduction o f the Euro. The extraordinary images include seventh century barbarian gold, crude mintages from Spain’s New World mines and even pirate treasure. He shows how coins illustrate the consolidation of Spain under Ferdinand and Isabel, the bitterly factionalism of the Mexican Revolution and the disturbing propaganda of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet. R ice’s program is made possible by funding from the Oregon Council for the H um anities, an independent, nonprofit affiliate o f the National Endowment for the H um anities. OCH is dedicated to providing opportunities for life-long learning in communities throughout Oregon. For more inform ation about OCH or Oregon Chautauqua please call Carol E.
