Thirty-eight students graduated from Heppner High School. The graduation cerem ony was held on Saturday, June 3 at the HHS gym. Laurie Murray had the honor of being class P rin cip al D aye Stone presented diplomas. The class motto was “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” valedictorian and Krystal Naims was salutatorian. Fourteen students participated in the lone High School com m en cem en t ceremony held on Friday, June 2 at the IHS gym. Amy Jepsen was the class valedictorian and Ashly Grams and Kristal Temple shared the honor of being class salutatorian. Community m em bers p resen ted the g rad u ates with various aw ards (See list in next w e e k ’s G a zette). UCA staff member Patty Smith, varsity cheer coach from Eastern W ashington U niversity, updated jum p, stunt and cheer technique with the Heppner squad. The squad also learned new dance routines that incorporated advanced stunting. “ We have a large group of girls with great potential. This will allow us to do a larger variety of stunting,” said cheer coach Virginia Grant. Individual awards were given by UCA in the cate g o rie s o f ju m p in g , stunting, cheering, dancing and spirit. Foster, H uddleston and Hong received all-star recognition, which qualifies them to p erfo rm an ce in the future. The UCA staff aw arded the H eppner Varsity Cheer Squad a merit trophy for the quality of their work. “In my six years of coaching, this group was the first to receive such high praise for qu ality of performance and effort,” added Grant. “1 was very proud of my s q u a d 's effort and attitude in taking this next step to be a better cheer squad. We are looking forward to a great season next year,” said Grant. The lone American Legion Post #95 Memorial Day Service began with the Legionnaires marching to the lone Memorial Field. A cerem ony was held to remember the veterans who have given their lives serv ing our country. Roses were given to family representatives o.f Tench Aldrich. Bobby Morgan. A lfred Emert, Herbert D avidson and C laren ce Harris. Pastor Lori Wiley lead the group in prayer and Krystal Temple sang “The Price of Freedom” by Ron Hamilton. The memorial w reath was placed and “Taps” finished that portion of the service. Participant then went to the Legion Hall where a pro p er flag retirem ent and disposal service was conducted by the Legionnaires. After refreshments, a presentation of Presidential Memorial Certificates was presented to w idow s in memory of their deceased Heppner to host 2nd annual bass and crappie fishing tournament Saturday, Julyl Are you tough enough to fish from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 at Willow Creek Lake? What a great way to start the weekend with great fishing, fun, prizes and a free BBQ with paid reg istra tio n , commented an enthusiastic spokesperson. Entry fees are $25 p er adult and $15 per children under the age of 14. Boats are limited to a total o f 25. Jr. Each wife told the date o f d ep lo y m en t and discharge dates, branch of service and some interesting facts about their husband or sweetheart. Pat Pettyjohn told about Lee telling her the day he was to be discharged “to have everything packed and ready to head for Morrow County because he could hardly wait to get home to see fam ily and friends." Betty Rietmann told of Bob seeing Pearl Harbor about three days after it had been bombed during the war. Some of the men were at Normandy and Japan. One lady was left with two children to care for w hile her husband was gone. Far too many tim es we forget the sacrifices made by families when servicemen are deployed into the military service.
