On the team were seventh graders Joe Armato, Jordan Hatfield, Dan Jeffreys, Codie Blondell, Brett Harrison, C ory S ilv ia , D evin Robinson, Nick Kempas and Jordan W right and sixth graders Seth Palmer, Zack Hintz, Justyn Peck, Connor Pappas, Cory Nelson and John Nelson. Justin Pranger and S hane Sm ith participated on the team early in the year and then went onto baseball. Kempas ended the season as one of the fastest seventh graders in the 100 meter of all time and his times would place amongst the eig h th g rad ers at championships. Jeffre y s had a personal best of 5 feet in the high jum p. As a seventh grader that ranks him at the top of all time bests. I n d i v i d u a l placements were: Kempas: Is' place- 200 meter, 2nd place- 100 meter and long jump; and 3rd place tie- 4x 100 relay. Jeffreys: l '1- high meters. Wright: 2nd- javelin; 3rd tie- 4x100 relay; and 7th tie- discus. Harrison: 3rd- 4x200 relay; 5th- triple jum p; 6th- 800 m eters; and 7lh- 100 meter hurdles. Peck: 4,h tie- high jump and 7th- 4x 100 relay. Palmer: 3rd- 4x200 relay and 6lh- 1500 meters. Silvia: 3rd- 300 meter hurdles and 4x200 relay and 5lh- 400 meters. Cody N elson: 5,h- 300 meter hurdles and 4x200 relay. H intz: 7,h- trip le jump and 4x 100 relay. Robinson: 3rd- 4x100 relay and 4x200 relay. Armato: 7,h- 4x100 relay. We Print • n ■ r I J • Business Cards 4 Heppner G azette 676-9228 Heppner Junior High tracks’ eighth grade girls and boys leave their marks on the junior high record board that will be still standing for years to come. Waiting for a new rubberized track has been hard, with the quality o f athletes in the eighth grade here at Heppner. For the past three seasons, it’s been dirt, grass and paved asphalt, awaiting the arrival of our new track surface. The new track is now finished. But our season is over. The great thing is that we have the track just in time, for a hard working group to condition for next year and m any years to come. The following girls and boys have set some outstanding records of times and distances to challenge those athletes coming out in future years. Kristen Van Cleave: shot put- 3 1 feet (old record set by Linsey Mitchell at 28 feet 3-1/2 inches in 2001), triple jum p- 31 feet (old reco rd set by Shanna Rietmann at 30 feet 7 inches in 2001). Brynna Rust: long jump- 15 feet 3 inches (old record set by Steph Payne in 1981 and tied by Casey Ingraham in 1996 at 14 feet 9 inches), 100 meter- 13.16 seconds (old record set by Steph Payne at 13.19 seco n ds in 1981), 200 meters- second with a time of 28.21 behind Payne with a time of 27.83 set in 1981, 100-meter hurdles- record of 17.9 seconds set in Sherman County this season, then broke by Erin Price, and a second all-time high of 16.45 seconds at Championships. Erin Price: 100- m eter h u rd les- 16.19 seconds (old records set by Annie Hisler in 1994, by herself in 2005 and Rust in 2006) and she stands second in 400 meter, 1500 meter, 800 meter and third in triple jump. Jo rd an H atfield : triple jum p- 37 feet 6-1/2 inches (broke his own school record several tim es this year), 100-meter hurdles- 14.35 seconds (old record set by Matt Jepsen at 15.81 seconds in 1996). Chris Lien: broke the old 100-meter hurdle school record twice this season and moved to second with his tim e of 15.44 at championships. Jared H uddleston: javelin- 161 feet (old record set by Spencer Palmer at 153 feet 6 inches in 2005.) Nick Kempas, Dan Jeffreys and Brent Eckman were district champions, but had not set any new school records. Kempas ended the season as one of the fastest seventh graders in the 100 meters of all time and his times would place amongst the eight g rad ers at championships. Jeffre y s had a personal best of Five feet in the high jump. As a seventh grader that ranks him at the top all time bests. Eckman. an eighth grader, was a repeat high jum p champion. He has a third all time record with his leap of 5 feet 5-1/2 inches. t The e ig h th grade g irls w ere th re e -p e a t champions, as this is their third year in a row to win the title . T his seaso n , the Heppner girls battled a much improved Riverside team, but came out on top once again with 156 points to R iv e rsid e ’s 139 points. Umatilla took third place with 114 points. The girls won seven events out of the 15 events, with Riverside taking six. The girls placed all nine co m p etin g at championships. They were Catherine McElligott, Erin Price, Brynna Rust, Kristen Van C leav e, Em ily Thompson, Ashley Wolff, H ollie W hatley, Jodessa Chapa and Brandi Hong. The e ig h th grade boys were also champions with a score of 139 points. Umatilla followed with 109 points. The boys on the team were Jordan Hatfield. Bryan H olland. Brent Eckm an, Jared H uddleston, Drew Johnson, Chris Lien, Mark McCabe, Tomas Elguezabal, Lane W rig h t, T yler Robinson, Keenon Jack and Wacy Coil. The Mustangs scored their last run in the fifth when Sean Murray got a p in ch -h it single, Kyle Carlson re-entered and stole second and scored on a Peck single. Peck went the final four innings in re lie f o f Rauch, scattering four hits and giving up no runs. B esides B a sile ’s three fo r th ree effo rt, Elguezabal went two for three w ith two RBI and scored twice. Peck went two for four and scored twice and Bolin went two for four. Senior Dan Basile went three for three with five RBI, including a three-run homerun in the first inning to lead the Heppner Mustang baseball team to a 9-3 lead after three innings. That led to a 12-3 w in over the visiting Dufur Rangers on Tuesday, May 16 to advance to the C o lu m b ia Basin C o n feren ce d istric t tournam ent on Saturday, May 20. A fter the Rangers failed to score in the top of the first, the Mustangs put up a six-spot in the bottom half as Tony Bolin led off with a sin g le, C o lto n H anson reached on an error, Quinn Peck reached on a fielder's choice, Nacho Elguezabal had an RBI single, Andre Rauch reached on an error to score on e, N athan Kennedy reached on another error to score another run and B asile belted his homerun to center field. The Rangers cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of the third, but the M ustangs answered with three of their own in the bottom half when Elguezabal belted a homerun Births to right-center, Kennedy doubled.
