Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 10,2006 - FIVE Neiffer receives scholar-athlete award from Beloit College B eloit C o lle g e seniors Adam Neiffer (lone) and Maria Laine (St. Paul, MN) have been named the recipients o f the Edw ard D eG eorge S ervice and Scholar-Athlete Award. The award was established in 2004 in honor of Edward D eG eorge, w ho served B eloit C o lleg e w ith distinction as director of athletics from 1985-2004 and as the B u ccan eers football coach from 1977- 2005. Neiffer, a first-team A ll-M idw est C onference linebacker in 2005, led the league w ith 139 ta ck les, including 39 solo, and b e c a m e B e lo it’s all- time tackling Neiffer leader in the process. He finished his stellar, four-year career with 256 tackles and 187 assists. The assist total ranks No. 2 on the all-time list. He also is Beloit’s all- tim e leader in defensive points with 554. B eloit’s d efen siv e p o ints are calculated using a formula that co m b in es ta c k le s, assists, and forces (plays that lead to other plays). Neiffer also finished fifth in the co u n try at the N CAA Division 111 level in tackles per game. He recorded two quarterback sacks and one fumble recovery this fall. He was a four-year letterwinner in football and started all 40 gam es during his career. L aine holds two College records in track and field as she is part of the record-setting 4X400-meter indoor and outdoor relay team s. She also was the women’s soccer team “Most Valuable Player” last fall after netting six goals and two assists. She is a three- year letterw inner in both soccer and track and field. She earned Academic All- M idw est C o n feren ce honors three times in soccer and twice in both indoor and outdoor track and field. T he E dw ard D eG eorge S erv ice and S c h o la r-A th le te Award re c o g n ize s o u tsta n d in g academ ic and ath le tic performance along with a commitment to service that has been demonstrated by DeGeorge in almost 40 years of teaching, coaching, and athletic administration. The award is presented annually to o u tsta n d in g stu d en t- athletes from the senior class who, during their college career, ex celled in th eir academic programs and in their athletic endeavors. Students take field trip to see the Heppner Head Start parents llamas recognized (L-R): Alex Victorio, Sandy Van Liew, Daniela Sanchez, Andrew Ames, Mary Ann Klguezabal and Mary Ann Flaherty. A lex V ictorio, D aniela S anchez and Andrew Ames, students at Heppner Elementary School in Mary Ann Elguezabal’s reading class took a field trip to Sandy Van Liew’s to see her llamas. The students had ju st finished reading the book, “ Is Your M ama a L lam a?" w ith v o lu n teer Mary Ann Flaherty. Flaherty read s the book to the students in English and then Elguezabal reads the book to them in Spanish. The book was part of the Accelerated R eader program and the stu d en ts receiv ed a 100 p ercen t on the AR comprehension test. As none o f the students had ever seen a llama, it was decided a field trip would be a great treat. Van Liew explained to the students how the llamas help her on her farm and how she uses th eir wool to make yam. The students were also allowed to pet the llamas. The City of Heppner’s Beautification/Parks and Land Commission recently presented a Certificate of Recognition to Les Schwab Tire Center of Heppner. Les Schwab Tires was recognized for their overall dedication, contributions and hard work towards creating the attractive environment of our community. More specifically, the business has helped out since the beginning of the annual City of Heppner Clean Up Day each spring by accepting old tires from residents. The Beautification Commission was created in 1999 by the Heppner City Council to educate, advise, promote and recognize attractive environments within the city limits. In 2005, it was com bined with the Parks and Land Commission. L ela M cD aniel, having been South Morrow counties Head Start Policy Council representative this year has been chosen to attend the 33rd A nnual N ational H ead Start A sso ciatio n T rain in g Conference in Detroit, MI. The conference is being held May 10-13. U m atilla M orrow H ead S tart is funding McDaniel's airfare, hotel accommodations and conference fees. Dee Burch was p re sen te d the P aren t Involvem ent o f the Year award on April 28, 2006 at U m atilla M orrow H ead S ta rt's W ellness Day fe stiv itie s. B urch has surpassed the expectation of volunteer service for the Head Start program. She has logged over 200 classroom volunteer hours, been active in Head Start Policy Council and held the position of secretary and treasurer for South M o rro w 's p aren t group. Burch receiv ed recognition on a plaque that will be displayed at the Head Start Main Office, a personal plaque, an agency polo shirt, $25 gift card and a basket of goodies. HJHS track team competes in Umatilla Neiffer honored with Beloit College blanket Beloit College honored 11 seniors - the largest number in seven years - with blankets, the College’s highest athletic honor, during the annual spring awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 3. Female athletes Alyssa Coriell, Dani Meehan and Becky Nilson were honored as were male athletes Dan Boehlen, Joe Cardillo, Ryan Edwards, Josh Hinz, Adam Neiffer, Sandile Nukuna, Rob Sjoberg, and Nate Skelton. To earn a blanket, a Beloit student must have earned first-team All-Midwest Conference honors in at least one sport and be recognized as one of the best athletes in the College’s storied history. She also broke her own record set last year in the javelin at 101 feet w ith a measure of 101 feet 6 inches. Erin Price places Isl in 100 meter hurdles set a NSR of 17.37 seconds. 2nd in triple jump and third in 400 meter and 200 meter.
