Neiffer receives scholar-athlete
award from Beloit College

Scholar-Athlete Award. The
award was established in
2004 in honor of Edward
D eG eorge, w ho served

w ith
distinction as director of
athletics from 1985-2004
and as the B u ccan eers
football coach from 1977-
2005.
Neiffer, a first-team

linebacker in
2005, led the
league w ith
139 ta ck les,
including 39
solo,
and
b e c a m e
B e lo it’s all-
time tackling Neiffer
leader in the process. He
finished his stellar, four-year
career with 256 tackles and
187 assists. The assist total
ranks No. 2 on the all-time
list. He also is Beloit’s all-
tim e leader in defensive
points with 554. B eloit’s

p o ints
are
calculated using a formula
that co m b in es ta c k le s,
assists, and forces (plays that
lead to other plays). Neiffer
also finished fifth in the
co u n try at the N CAA
Division 111 level in tackles
per game. He recorded two
quarterback sacks and one
fumble recovery this fall. He
was a four-year letterwinner
in football and started all 40
gam es during his career.

their athletic endeavors.

reading class took a field trip
to Sandy Van Liew’s to see
her llamas. The students had
ju st finished reading the
book, “ Is Your M ama a
L lam a?" w ith v o lu n teer
Mary Ann Flaherty. Flaherty
read s the book to the
students in English and then
Elguezabal reads the book to
them in Spanish. The book
was part of the Accelerated
R eader program and the
stu d en ts receiv ed a 100
p ercen t on
the
AR
comprehension test.
As none o f the
students had ever seen a
llama, it was decided a field
trip would be a great treat.
Van Liew explained to the
students how the llamas help
her on her farm and how she
uses th eir wool to make
yam. The students were also
allowed to pet the llamas.

certificate of recognition from Beautification Commission
member Chuck Bailey.
The City of Heppner’s Beautification/Parks and
Land Commission recently presented a Certificate of
Recognition to Les Schwab Tire Center of Heppner.
Les Schwab Tires was recognized for their overall
dedication, contributions and hard work towards creating
the attractive environment of our community.
More specifically, the business has helped out since
the beginning of the annual City of Heppner Clean Up Day
each spring by accepting old tires from residents.
The Beautification Commission was created in 1999
by the Heppner City Council to educate, advise, promote
and recognize attractive environments within the city limits.
In 2005, it was com bined with the Parks and Land
Commission.

Start Main Office, a personal
plaque, an agency polo shirt,
$25 gift card and a basket of
goodies.
HJHS track team competes in
Umatilla
Neiffer honored with Beloit
College blanket
Beloit College honored 11 seniors - the largest
number in seven years - with blankets, the College’s highest
athletic honor, during the annual spring awards ceremony
on Wednesday, May 3. Female athletes Alyssa Coriell, Dani
Meehan and Becky Nilson were honored as were male
athletes Dan Boehlen, Joe Cardillo, Ryan Edwards, Josh
Hinz, Adam Neiffer, Sandile Nukuna, Rob Sjoberg, and
Nate Skelton. To earn a blanket, a Beloit student must
have earned first-team All-Midwest Conference honors in
at least one sport and be recognized as one of the best
athletes in the College’s storied history.
