T he b eg in n in g Condon FFA ag mechanics teams earned third place at the District FFA Shop Skills Career Development Event this past Thursday at Blue M ountain C om m unity C ollege. Team m em bers were Shelby Coy, Brook G riffith, Lilley M itchell, Shelby Woody and Tyler Urbach. Shelby Coy earned first in the oxy-acetylene welding competition. Brook Griffith earned first in the plumbing area and Shelby Woody earned second in tool id e n tific a tio n . A reas of com petition include oxy- a ce ty len e w elding, arc w elding, plum bing, e le c tric ity , tool re c o n d itio n in g , tool id e n tific a tio n and a 50 questions multiple-choice test. A d d itio n ally , the advanced surveying team earned first place. Team m em bers w ere R achel Nelson, Jamie Schell and Amber Heidy. Remington Pike earned second place in the plasma-cutting contest for the advanced team. The FFA ch ap te r extends their appreciation to the follow ing people for helping members prepare for the contest; Rob Conlee of Jamieson and Marshall for plumbing demonstrations, Dewey Kennedy for training the surveying team and Larry Hardie for helping prepare students in the electricity area. Rebekah Lodge to hold monthly card party The monthly card party in Lexington hosted by Holly Rebekah Lodge will be this Saturday, May 6. Play will start at 7 p.m. For only $5, one can have an evening of fun, food, visiting and some will be lucky enough to win a prize. There are 43 students participating in the sixth through eighth grade program under head coach Susan H isler and a ssistan t coach M elissa Coiner. The six th and seventh grade boys in a combined effort took runner up honors at the all-league meet. The Girls State sessio n w ill be held at W illam ette U niversity in Salem June 11-17. About 250 o f O re g o n ’s m ost o u tstan d in g high school junior girls are expected to attend. L aR ue is the d a u g h ter o f R obin and M elissa LaR ue and is a m em ber o f the N ational Honor Society and is active in the Spanish, drama and international clubs. She is also active in volleyball, track and basketball. She was chosen as a Big Sky Scholar Athlete in 2004 and 2005. She has served as a 4- H camp counselor, coached Pee-W ee b ask etb all and volunteered as a lifeguard. She’s a member of the lone Youth Group and has helped feed the h o m eless in P o rtlan d . She has also volunteered to help at the lone Com m unity Church Auction. H olland is the daughter of Dale and Karen Holland and is a member of the National Honor Society. She is active in the Spanish and drama clubs. She’s a 4- H member and has served as a camp counselor. The A m erican Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a nationwide program that simulates city, county and state levels of government. The program provides the opportunity for high school juniors from throughout the state to become participants in the fu n d am en tals o f democratic self-government through stru ctu red role- playing. Experiences may include public speaking w hile c am p aig n in g for v ario u s p ublic o ffice s, drafting and presenting bills for passage in the Girls State legislature, participating in m ock trials and a w ide variety of workshops, and hearing presentations by some of O regon’s highest elected officials. Delegates to Oregon G irls S tate also gain know ledge of the duties, p riv ile g e s, rig h ts and responsibilities of American c itiz e n sh ip . T hro u g h a variety of fun activities, they w ill gain a g re a te r appreciation of the American Flag, the sacrifices made by o u r v eteran s and our American way of life. The tree was planted during Arbor Day month and allows the group to continue the National Garden Club tree program.
