By Rick Paullus The Stanfield Tigers took sole possession of first place in the Columbia Basin Conference East Division by sw eep in g the H ep p n er Mustangs 16-5 in six innings and 4-3 in eight innings on S atu rd ay , A pril 22 in Heppner. The Mustangs, 3 and 2 in the CBC and 5 and 8 overall, will be at Weston- McEwen on Saturday, April 29 for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. before returning home for a game against Umatilla on Tuesday, May 2 at 4:30 p.m. The M ustangs fell into a hole in the first game early as the Tigers scored three runs each in the first and second innings. They finally put a run on the board in the bottom of the third when Tony Bolin doubled, C o lto n H anson w alked, Quinn Peck singled to load the b ases and N acho Elguezabal walked to force in a run. A fte r the T ig ers added a run in the fourth, the Mustangs answered in the bottom half when with two out, Bolin singled, Hanson reached on an error and Peck drilled a home run to right- center to cut the lead to 7-4. The Tigers added a run in the fifth , but the Mustangs answered in the bottom half when Nathan Kennedy tripled and came hom e on a Dan B asile groundout to cut the lead to 8-5. That was as close as they would get though as the Tigers blew the game open with an eight-run sixth inning and the Mustangs couldn't answer as the game ended on the ten-run rule. Peck was tw o for three with three RBI and Bolin went two for four and scored twice. The Mustangs took an early lead in the second game as Andre Rauch and Robbie Smith each hit solo hom eruns in the second inning. It stayed 2-0 until the fo u rth w hen the T ig ers scored a run to cut the lead in half. The Tigers took a 3- 2 lead in the fifth, but the Mustangs came back to tie it in the bottom half when H anson d o u b led . Peck singled and Rauch had a RBI single. The Mustangs had a ch an ce to win it in the bottom of the seventh when Bolin sent a deep fly ball to left that was caught against the fence, then they had Peck at third with two outs, but couldn't get him home. Rauch went seven innings giving up just three hits, one earned run and striking out four, while going two for four with two RBI at the plate. Peck went two for three and Hanson went two for four. This was the last performance for this year. Heppner classes will begin again in September. Heppner to celebrate the National Day of Prayer Everyone is invited to a half-hour prayer meeting for the Heppner community to celebrate the National Day of Prayer. It will be from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.. on Thursday, May 4 at City Hall in the meeting area. Prayer topics include our schools, military, town and churches. Specific requests will be taken. Please write requests out on a note card and bring them to the meeting. No one will be required to pray aloud or in public. The National Day of Prayer has been a federally recognized holiday for 54 years. It was enacted by President Truman and a joint effort of Congress in 1952. Thousands of community across the country will be holding special services to celebrate the religious freedoms our veterans fought and died for. This meeting is a Christian meeting, though all people of all faiths are encouraged to meet and prayer annually on the National Day of Prayer. 1
