Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday. April 12,2006 - SEVEN Yard of the M onth B ecause of th e ir ability to combine a love of fam ily a c tiv itie s, dogs, socializing and gardening into a well-maintained and beautiful yard, Keith and Angie Hanson o f 395 N. Gale have been selected as H e p p n e r’s Yard o f the Month for April 2006. Moving here in 1995 for em ploym ent, the H anson’s purchased their corner lot home and have been m aking a d d itio n s, im provem ents and enhancem ents ever since. The home was built in 1907 for in-laws by Jeff Jones who also built other homes on the block for family. An early photo of the home shows two cement um planters, one of which is still in use in the front yard. Angie is the planner and weeder of the yard while Keith builds and does most o f the m ow ing and w eedeating. They seeded their newer lawn and irrigate w ith a w ell-p lan n ed underground sp rin k le r system. Several years ago, a neighboring historic home burnt and w as not salvageable. The Hanson's were able to purchase that lot and Angie’s yard plans doubled. The lot's addition was made seamless by a 6- foot cedar fence along the back and one side and with a white painted wood fence on the lots’ street sides. That fence is just the right height for neighbors and passersby to socialize over. The home’s original front gate opens up to their front walk. A side gate entry has a white arbor with a purple variegated clematis twining through it. The Hanson’s kept the two trees that were in the yard upon moving in. One is a plu m /p ru n e tree that p ro d u ces lots of dark maroon fruit and the other is a tall Black Walnut tree. Hanging from the walnut tree is a thick rope swing that has been swung on by many local kids. A ngie has added shade and ornamental trees including Birch, Green Ash, Corkscrew Willow, Crimson King Maples, Golden Chain, Linden, Choke Cherry, Pin Oak and Flowering Pear. N eatly bordered flow erbeds are scattered throughout the yard with a variety of perennials and shrubs. These include roses, su cc u le n ts, hardy ornamental grasses, mugho pine, euonymus, butterfly b ushes, dianthus, vinca, spirea, snowball, forsythias, lilac, redtw ig dogw ood, thyme, daylily and iris. Keith and Angie Hanson m u ltip le M ock O range shrubs. Her favorite plants are the various peonies and the rhododendron that has been an extreme challenge to grow. Keith built a latticed arbor with outdoor lights and Angie recently planted the climbing rose, “Joseph's Coat,” which will eventually cover the arbor. The highlight of their landscape is a large pond with its own waterfall. A major project that Keith and Angie did themselves, it is rimmed with large rocks of all varieties, including a green stone that rem inds Angie of their native state, M ontana. The H a n so n 's keep the waterfall flowing year round, which can be a challenge during freezing te m p e ratu res. Sako, the fam ily’s friendly year old C h o co late L ab rad o r Retriever, has claimed the pond as his own. He spends hours in its 3-foot to 4-foot depths diving in, knocking rocks in, ch asin g fish, sp lash in g about and retrieving water plants onto the yard. Although Keith recom m ended building a garage instead of a pond, it is his favorite part of the yard. The soil is very good in the yard and H anson's have found broken china in it and also an old padlock with working keys. In the back yard is a large kennel area and room for about six cord o f neatly stack ed Firewood next to the wooden original shop/shed. There is also room nearby for a large Lexington Auto Body is doing Auto Body Repair, Glass Repair and Replacement, and Towing.
