Morrow County School District blocks MySpace.com continued from page one after further investigation, a M orrow C ounty adm inistrator was able to gain access to a number of “ p riv a te ” student sites inadvertently through other s tu d e n ts ’ “o p e n ” sites, shedding light on the dangers and m isco n cep tio n s of internet safety. One principal noted that all they had to do was log on to MySpace.com, type in a student’s name, and they had complete access to her age, cell phone number, where she goes to school, where she likes to hang out, etc. As A lex an d ria Rocha, news columnist from the Palo A lto W eekly reported, “besides posting p ersonal in fo rm a tio n ..., som e stu d en ts are also putting highly suggestive sexual and drug and alcohol re lated co n ten t on th eir profiles.” Nancy Pasternack of the Santa Cruz Sentinel rep o rts that. “ P la y b o y ’s current campaign, the Girls of M ySpace, solicit nude photos...to be considered for p u b lic a tio n in the magazine.” Jim Boyce, dean of student affairs at White R iver High School in Buckley, Washington, states, “ We have seen a very n eg ativ e im pact w ith MySpace.com as students from our school and others use it for negative purposes such as threats, harassment and malicious gossip.” M ost PTA and parent-help organizations strongly encourage parents to ed u cate th em selv es thoroughly by visiting the site to see how it works. Cyclist expresses appreciation for Heppner participation To the Editor: Dear Residents of Heppner, They say it is never too late to do something. In my case, I hope “ do something,” means writing a letter o f appreciation for som ething in 2005 that I should have written in 2005. I wanted to give my a p p re cia tio n to y o u r co m m u n ity fo r the sp o n so rsh ip , d o n a tio n s, volunteers and support on the 2005 Columbia Plateau Cycling Race. I appreciate the warmth your town gave tow ards m y self and my cycling peers during the athletic com petition. It is really your involvement and co o p eratio n th at m akes these cycling races happen. Your help p ro m o tes a healthy alternative for kids and adults to spend their free time. Your support fosters an environment for our future Olympic athletes and even Tour de France riders. If it was not for your community, I would not even get the future opportunity to tell my g ran d k id s all the w acky stories that go along with cycling races. My New Y e ar’s resolution is to write these letters for events like this that I take a part of in a more timely fashion.
