Andre Rauch had seven points and Nathan Van C leave and A aron Allstott each had four points in the second as they increased their lead to 34-22 at the half. Elguezabal had four points in the third, but the Tigerscots closed the gap to 40-33 after three, but Van Cleave had six points and the Mustangs hit seven of eight free throws in the fourth as they held on for the win. The Mustangs dropped to 12 and 12 on the year with the loss. The M ustangs trailed 6-5 after one, but came back to lead 9-8 in a low scoring first half. Sarah Milner scored four points in the third, but the Tigerscots took a 16-15 lead after three and pulled away in the fourth despite a 3-pointer from Whitney Matthews. M atthew s led the Mustangs with five points and two steals with Milner adding four points, seven rebounds, two steals and two assists. Mustang JV boys end season eight. with win Heppner 16 9 19 9-53 By Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustang JV boys, under first year coach Ken Grieb, ended their season on a high note by beating the Stanfield Tigers, 53-32, on Friday, Feb. 10 in Stanfield. The M ustangs ended the year with a 13 and 4 record. The M ustangs jumped out to a 16-8 lead after one, getting six points from Justin Delveaux and four from Aaron Allstott and still led 25-16 at the half as Delveaux hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. They put the gam e aw ay in the third outscoring the Tigers 19-5, getting six points each from Lane B ailey and A ndre Rauch and five from Nathan Van Cleave, taking a 44-21 lead into the fourth. Nacho Elguezabal had six points as the Mustangs coasted to the easy win. D elveaux led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, with Van Cleave adding 10 points and Bailey the Mustangs with six points and six rebounds with Kelsie Fox adding five rebounds and three steals. T he Mustangs fell to 8 and 6 in the C BC and 10 and 8 overall. The loss dropped the Mustangs into a three-way tie for third with Weston- McEwen and Pilot Rock and because of the tie-breaking process will end up in fifth and will play fourth place Pilot Rock at the district tournament in Pendleton on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Mustang started out hot with Matt McCabe scoring off a drive and hitting a 3-pointer and RJ Farrens scoring inside and feeding Matt Van Cleave and Rory Kilkenny and an 11-1 lead. Mikel Britt scored inside, Quinn Peck scored off a pass from Kilkenny and Farrens fed Matt Kenny for a lay-in to make it 17-11 after one. Britt hit one of two free throws and scored off a pass from Peck, but the Tigers cam e back to get within 20-18. McCabe hit a long jumper and Peck scored twice inside, but the foul- troubled Mustangs clung to a 26-25 lead at the half. Kilkenny hit two free throws and scored off a pass from Kenny and Van Cleave Mustang girls fall to Tigerscots By Rick Paullus T he H ep p n er M u stan g v arsity g irls couldn’t hang on to a 19-14 lead in the second quarter as the d e fe n d in g state champion Weston-McEwen Tigerscots came back to beat the Heppner Mustang varsity girls 52-42 on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Heppner in Columbia Basin Conference play. The Mustangs fell to 6 and 7 in the CBC and 9-12 overall with the loss. The M ustangs got off to a good start as Megan Orr hit a 3-pointer and Aftan Betsinger hit one of two free throws to give them a 6-2 lead, but the Tigerscots came back with seven straight to take the lead. A last second 3-pointer by the Mustangs bounced off the rim as time ran out.
