Contributing from the The lone boys’ JV team w rapped up th eir league schedule last week w ith tw o stro n g w ins, defeating Echo on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in Echo and downing Helix at home on Friday, Feb. 10. The JVs finished league play with an 11-2 record. The Echo game was tight in the first quarter with each team scoring 10 points. Then the Cardinals cracked the game wide open with a 20-point second quarter on their way to a 50-37 win. Cory Peterson and Justin Archer shared scoring honors with 10 points each. Also scoring for lone was W illiam B ergstrom with e ig h t, C lay M orter and Kevin Fowler with six each and William Wehrli and Paul Hams with four each. Peterson and Morter grabbed five boards each to help the team to a slight 25- 24 rebounding edge. Archer, Hams and Fowler had six steals each in the game and Archer paced the team with seven assists. M orter had five blocked shots and Wehrli had three. Coach Jim Swanson was pleased with the team's hustle and pressure defense. "We forced them into 37 turnovers and we had 33 steals as well as 17 assists. We put on our p ressure defense and that's what won the gam e,” he noted. He com m ended W illiam Bergstrom's defensive play and Justin A rcher’s hustle and leadership. On Friday, H elix took a 12-4 first quarter lead but the Cardinals responded with a 28-point effort in the second period to run away from the Grizzlies. The Final score was 55-24. William Wehrli had “ the gam e o f his life ” a cco rd in g to C oach Jim Swanson, recording eight blocked shots, 10 rebounds and five points. “He put on quite a show with all of his blocks and rebounds. I was really proud of him,” said Swanson. Nine of the Cardinals found their way into the scorebook led by Paul Hams with 10 points. Also scoring w ere Cory Peterson and C lay M orter with eight, Kevin Fowler and William Bergstrom with six. Matt Coleman and William Wehrli with Five, Justin Archer with four and Dalton Campbell with three. lone d em o lish ed Helix on the boards, 42-17, led by Wehrli’s 10. Peterson, Morter and Campbell also grabbed five rebounds each. The team recorded 26 assists, led by Archer with four and Hams and Peterson with three each. A nother great stat category was steals w here the C ard in als managed 27 in the game, led by Hams with eight and Archer with four. “ O ur defense and rebounding was especially good in this g a m e,” co m m en ted C oach Swanson. Tyler Brown, Kelly Thompson and Tony Bolin co m b in ed for 52 o f the team’s points and some hard w ork on the part o f the rotating post players tallied up a total of 28 more. The Cards scratched their way to a 20-10 first quarter lead and lengthened the le^d a bit in the second to take a 42-29 lead at the half. The third quarter was played almost even, but a stro n g 23 point fourth quarter put the Cards in front by an insurmountable total. T hom pson led all scorers and was one of three Cards in double Figures with 21 points. Brown added 20 post position was Nik Kamp and Dan Long with eight each. Kip Krebs with six, Clay Morter with four and John Walton with two. The C ards solidly outrebounded the Cougars 41 -28 led by Kamp with 11, Long with nine and Brown with six. Bolin tallied nine assists, helped out by Brown with seven and Thompson and Long with three each. Bolin also had four steals to lead the team. “Tyler, K elly and Tony were really in sync and it was really fun to watch them run the floor,” said a ssistan t coach Jim Swanson. "They also gave us 19 out of our 24 assists.” Swanson was also pleased with the performances from the post players. “They gave us 28 p o in ts spread out betw een five p lay ers. Everyone gave 110 percent,” he noted. DesBouillons makes all-star bowling team By Josie J. Miller On Sunday, Feb. 12, six of Oregon’s high school bowling teams gathered for a to u rn am en t at D esert Lanes in Hermiston. The teams present were boys and girls teams from Umatilla, P en d leto n , T he D alles, H erm iston, H eppner and lone. Each team had five players. Representing lone for the boys were: Gordy Wegwerth, Kyle Palmateer, James Acock, Cody Hollis and John Walton; and for the girls: Rebeka DesBouillons, Marley Pfingsten, Brittnee D e sB o u illo n s, M eghan Gaines and Kristal Temple. “It’s really fun when you get a strike and it is just fun,” commented Rebeka w hen ask ed w hat she enjoyed most this season. At the tournament four all-star players were selected. Among them was lo n e ’s ow n, B rittn ee DesBouillons. As fourth all- star she w ill trav el to co m p ete at the A ll-sta r tournament March 11 and 12 in Forest Grove. "Everything really came together,” said Brittnee. The top four All- star team s w ill receiv e scholarships. At the end of the day the C ard in als brought home fourth place for the girls and fifth for the boys. the school library. President Lynn Dee R am os was p re sen te d w ith a gift certificate for her work on the dinner and for organizing the painting of the cafeteria. Dean Robinson and Del LaRue presented a list of names for the Sports Hall of Fame for lone. Selections were based on athletes being successful in at least two sports, having a positive attitude and good academic standing. The First group to be honored w ill include athletes from 1922-1960. A recognition dinner is planned for Dec. 8. The Hall o f Famers will also be honored at the basketball game Dec. 9. LaR ue has found two companies that sell 40- foot containers the school hopes to use for a sports storage unit. The containers range in price from $2100- $2600 and can be delivered for an extra $630. The club approved the purchase and d e liv e ry o f a co n tain er. LaRue will select one and make the purchase. Superintendent Bryn Browning has made a grant ap p licatio n tem plate for individuals to use when they have a m onetary request from the club. D ebbie M organ requested a list of names of parents to contact for the district basketball ad. An ad will be placed in the Heppner Gazette-Times the week of the tournament. The club approved a tten d in g the d is tric t tournament. The club also approved providing a charter bus for any lone teams going to state. L ib rarian C athy Halvorsen requested money for prizes for the reading incentive program for grades 4-8. Members approved $75 for prizes and $80 for a pizza party fo r those who completed the program. The 2005 graduates who received Cardinal Club scholarships will be issued checks in the am ount of $200 each. New t-shirts will be ordered for community band members and paid for by the club. Club members were re co g n ized for th e ir contributions to the school over the basketball season: Karen Padberg organized the dinners for the visiting teams throughout the basketball season; Laurel Cannon sold booster club dinner tickets and community calendars; Ram os, Betty C iray and R obinson served on the b o o ster club d in n er committee; and Penny Krebs put num erous hours into painting the stripes in the cafeteria hallway.
