In the opening game, M egan O rr sco red five points in the first and Aftan Betsinger scored eight points in the second as the Mustangs took a 19-12 lead at the half. Ranier came back in the third to take a 29-23 lead, but the Mustangs got six points from Regi Seitz and fo u r from K atie Kilkenny in the fourth to tie it at 37-37 at the end o f regulation. Ranier outscored the Mustangs 5-1 in the extra period to take the win. Orr led the Mustangs will 11 points with Seitz and B etsin g e r adding eight points each and Kilkenny added seven. On the next night, Seitz scored six points and Orr hit two 3-pointers, but the Mustangs trail 19-16 at the half. Estacada outscored the Mustangs 9-4 in the third and they couldn't recover despite five points from Seitz in the fourth. Seitz led the way with 11 points with Orr adding eight points. Mustang girls hold off Rockets By Rick Paullus The H ep p n er Mustang varsity girls rallied in the second half to beat the visiting Pilot Rock Rockets 50-46 on Friday, Jan. 13 in Columbia Basin Conference play to improve to 3 and 2 in the CBC and 5 and 7 overall. The Rockets led 10- 7 after one and 25-19 at the half, but Sherilyn Peck had seven points and Megan Orr five, including a 3-pointer, as the Mustangs came back to take a 35-34 lead going into the fourth quarter. Orr and Regi Seitz each had four points in the fourth as the M ustangs held on for the win. Peck led a balanced sco rin g a ttack w ith 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Aftan Betsinger had nine points and eight rebounds and Orr had nine points, seven rebounds four assists and three steals. The Vikings led 9-6 after one, 2 3 -18 at the half and 38-32 after three, before the Mustangs rallied behind A ftan B e tsin g e r’s seven points and Regi Seitz’s four points in the fourth quarter to finally take the lead. They couldn’t hold it though as the Vikings came back to take a 53-51 win. B etsin g e r led the Mustangs with 14 points, 12 rebounds and there steals with Lyndi Patton adding 10 points and two assists. Seitz had nine points, four steals and three assists. Mustang JV girls split over weekend Bv Rick Paullus After dropping a 41- 22 decision to the Weston- M cE w en T ig e rsc o ts on Friday, Jan. 20 in Athena, the Heppner Mustang JV girls came home and soundly beat the Stanfeld Tigers 38-19 on Saturday. The M ustangs, now 8 and 7 on the year, will be at Umatilla on Friday, Jan. 27 and will be back home on Saturday, Jan. 28 to face the Sherman County Huskies. The Mustangs were tied with the Tigerscots at 6- 6 after one and actually led 12-10 at the half, but were o u tsc o re d 31 -1 0 in the second half. Kelsie Fox led the Mustangs with eight points, with Kaylee Helfrecht and Sarah M ilner each adding four points. Fox had six points in the first q u a rte r as the Mustangs took a 14-6 lead after one against the Tigers on Saturday. They continued to lead 19-12 at the half. They then led 23-15 after three, but Milner and Baillie Keithley each added four points in the fourth as the M ustangs coasted to the win. Milner led the way with eight points and two assists, with Fox adding five rebounds and two steals to her six points. Keithley had six points and two steals. Heppner JV boys sweep two By Rick Paullus T he H eppner Mustang JV boys held on to get two narrow wins over the w eekend b eatin g Weston-McEwen 61-59 on Friday, Jan. 20 in Athena and holding off Stanfield 39-36 on Saturday to win their sixth game in a row. The Mustangs, now 8 and 3 on the year, will be at Umatilla on Friday, Jan. 27 and back at home for Sherman County on Saturday, Jan. 28. In A th en a, Lane bailey had six points as the Mustangs jumped out to a 19-8 lead and still led 30-25 at the half. Bailey had nine points, including tw o 3- pointers, in the third as they still led by five at 47-42 and they held off the Tigerscots in the fourth to get the win. N acho Elguezabal and B ailey each had 17 points to lead the Mustangs, with Andre Rauch adding eight points. Elguezabal had five points as the Mustangs and Stanfield Tigers were tied at 10-10 a fte r one and eventually took a 23-19 lead at the half. They built their lead to 35-24 getting 12 points from Elguezabal, but had to hang on getting two clutch free throw s from Justin Delveaux in the final seconds. The Mustangs dropped to 4 and 3 in the CBC with the loss and will be at Umatilla on Friday, Jan. 27 before returning home for S herm an C o u n ty on Saturday, Jan. 28. Lyndi Patton had four points and Sherilyn Peck th re e , but the Tigerscots took an 18-14 lead after one and extended it to 25-19 at the half despite a 3-pointer from Megan Orr. The Tigerscots continued to pull away in the second half to take the win. Orr finished with 10 points, five rebounds and adding six p o in ts, eight rebounds and three steals. Katie Kilkenny had six points and 12 rebounds, Patton had six points and two steals, Aftan Betsinger had four rebounds and two assists and Peck had two steals.
