The Vikings took a 10-6 lead after one and still led 22-17 at the half despite three 3-pointers from Justin Delveaux. The M ustangs narrowed the gap to 33-30 after three getting six points from Andre Rauch and five from Nacho Elguezabal, but the Vikings hit eight of 12 free throws in the fourth to hold off the Mustangs and take the win. D elveaux finished with 11 points, with Rauch adding 10 points. In M oro, N athan VanCleave and Elguezabal each had six points as the Mustangs jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one and Van- Cleave added eight more and Tony H aguew ood and Aaron Allstott each added four points as they took a 32- 13 lead at the half. Elgueza bal had seven points in the third and Brendan McEllig- ott had four points in the fourth as the M ustangs coasted to the 13-point win. Umatilla 10 12 11 12- Mustang JV girls drop two By Rick Paullus It was not a good weekend on Jan. 6 and 7 for the Heppner M ustang JV girls as they lost at home to the Umatilla Vikings 50-30 and were nipped on the road at Sherman 23-22 to drop their record to 6 and 5 on the year. The Vikings took a 9-6 lead after one, but the M ustangs got five points from Kaylee Helfrecht, four from K ylie D oherty and three from Kelsie Fox to get within 20-18 at the half. The Vikings came back in the second half outscoring the Mustangs 30-12 to win go ing away. H elfrecht finished w ith seven p o in ts, w ith Doherty adding six. At S herm an, the Huskies took an 8-6 lead af ter one as Fox had four points and they still led 10-9 at the half. The Huskies led 14-12 after three and held on for the narrow win despite four fourth-quarter points from Stephanie Cutsforth and three from Sarah Milner. M ilner had five points. Fox and Cutsforth each finished with four and Melissa West added three. The Mustangs hit six of 22 free throws compared to the Huskies seven of 43. Mustang JV girls followed up a home win over the Pilot Rock Rockets by a score of 39-26 on Friday, Jan. 13 by losing to the Culver Bulldogs 35-26 on Saturday in Culver. The Mustangs, now 7 and 6 on the year, w ill be at Weston-McEwen on Friday, Jan. 20 before returning home on Saturday to play the Stanfield Tigers. The Mustangs took a 9-4 lead after one, getting four points from Stefanie C u tsfo rth ag ain st the Rockets and increased it to 24-9 at the half getting seven points from Kvlie Doherty in the second quarter. They still led 31-15 after three and made four fourth-quarter points from Sarah Milner to coast to the win. D oherty had 11 points and four rebounds with Cutsforth adding nine points, five rebounds and two assists. A g ain st »Fort Vancouver, the M ustangs raced out to a 16-2 lead after one, getting five points from Matt Kenny and four each from Matt VanCleave and Matt McCabe and led 22-8 at the half. VanCleave had 12 points in the third quarter as they increased their lead to 40-21 and they weathered a com e back from Fort Vancouver to hold on for the win. Lindsay Cutsforth scored six and A m ber G ray, Sarah Kendrick and Julia Meyer chipped in two points each, The Cardinals and P onies only played tw o quarters of an A game. The Ponies won the shortened 1 gam e, 28-6. Seven Pony p lay ers scored, w ith Catherine McElligott leading the way with eight points and Kristen Van Cleave bringing in six points. Coach Melissa Coiner credited the win to strong defensive pressure, “Our defense is improving with each gam e. Jessica Hughes has really led our defense with her intensity the last few games," Coiner said. »
