This year students from Irrig o n , H eppner and Boardman participated in the contest. The students were asked to h ig h lig h t the benefits conservation has brought to our country and how conservation improves the lives of others. CHAM BER CHATTER By Claudia Hughes The Chamber’s New Year Toast Volunteers worked very hard To put all the tree lights up. Candy canes decked the Chamber tree. And there was coffee in the cup. Santa was pretty much on schedule And local stores were stocked. Had snowflakes fallen on Christmas, We would have been shocked. The p o sters w ere judged at the end o f the school year and awards were given in November. First place winners were sent to compete at the state level. Bree Tolar, Irrigon Jr./Sr. H igh School stu d en t, received an award for the most creative poster at the state competition. “It’s the first time the judges have given such an award,” stated a district spokesperson. Ampico was a small company established in 1916 in E ast R o ch ester, New York. G ibson g u ita rs acquired the Ampico name in 2001 when they purchased the Baldwin Piano Co. T he local S e n tim e n ta lists sin g in g group donated the funds to have the piano tuned. Many people were involved in m o ving, settin g up and tuning Kathy Turner’s piano. Heppner boy wins big Christmas stocking Six-year-old Joseph Jones of Heppner was an excited little boy last week when he learned he was the winner of the big Christmas stocking given away each year by Devin Mini- Mart in Heppner. W « Print Business Cards “Happy New Year I The Port of Morrow and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife have announced an agreement to open a portion of port lands near Boardman for game bird hunting access through the end o f w aterfo w l seasons. These lands are open immediately and access is allowed seven days a week with no permit. O DFW d iv isio n adm inistrator Ron Anglin said h u n ters should a p p re cia te th is new opportunity. “Hunters who treat private land access with resp ect and obey the regulations will assist greatly in keeping public access programs for future hunting seasons,” Anglin said. Agricultural circles owned by the port, combined w ith ad jac e n t C oyote Springs Wildlife Area, offer nearly 570 acres for hunting. These lands primarily offer field hunting for geese. The five agricultural circles are planted with winter wheat or alfalfa. To reach the hunt area from 1-84, take the Port of Morrow exit (exit 165), travel north on Laurel Road, turn right (east) on Columbia Avenue, turn right on Rippee R oad, and trav el approximately 0.25 mile to reach C oyote S p rin g s Wildlife Area and the Port of Morrow Cooperative Hunt Area parking lot. Maps and specific area regulations will be available at the entry sign located in the wildlife area parking lot, or at the Oregon D epartm ent o f Fish and Wildlife’s Pendleton office. H u n ters are rem in d ed that th is area o p e ra tes u n d er sp ec ific restrictions. Hunters should carefully read the regulations provided on map boards and area maps. To O n e & All" Port of Morrow opens lands for hunting access Ed Carwithen from John Day was at St. Patrick’s Senior Center Friday, Dec. 23 to tune and repair the Ampico Baby Grande that was recently moved to the center from Texas. Ed started tuning p ian o s in 1962 by first reading a book. He then moved to Panama in 1966 where his mentor taught him the skill of piano tuning. He moved back to John Day in 1992. Keith Kopp, who was tuning pianos in the John Day area, was so busy at the time he turned over the piano tuning portion of his business to Ed.
