The local G arden Club along with the National Garden Club Inc. and the USDA Forest Service have invited grade school students to participate in the 2006 Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl G arden Club poster contest. This year the contest was dedicated to helping p rev en t the spread o f in v asiv e sp ecies in our Nation’s forests. W inners o f the National Poster Contest will re c eiv e v ario u s prizes in clu d in g a trip to W ashington D .C. and a savings bond. Winners will be announced at the 2006 National Garden Clubs, Inc. Convention. DA’s Report Lighting contest begins C olum bia B asin Electric sponsors the lighting contest. All of the winners will receive a discount of $25 off of their electric bill. The categories will in clu d e e n trie s from b u sin esses and private residences to include Best U se o f L ig h tin g , M ost O riginal Setting, and the Judge’s Favorite.The street with the most lighting will be nam ed H eppner H oliday Land. M artin completes basic training A ir Force Airman Drew A. M artin has g rad u ated from basic military training at Lackland A ir Force B ase, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, Martin studied the A ir Force m ission, organization, and military custom s and c o u rtesies; perform ed d rill and cerem ony m arches, and received physical training, rifle m arksmanship, field train in g e x e rc ise s, and special training in human relations. In addition, Martin earns c re d its tow ard an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son o f Kathy Heathman o f S.W. f f W ilson Lane, Boardman, Ore. M artin is a 2005 graduate of Riverside High School, Boardman. lone hosts Holiday Open House The annual lone Christmas open house has been set for Friday, Dec. 16 from 10 a.m . to 3 p.m . R efresh m en ts and door prizes will be offered at many o f the businesses around town offering folks a great opportunity to enjoy the spirit of the season. The tournament began for the JV boys on Dec. 2 when they went head to head with the R iv ersid e P irates. The Cardinals were leading 6-0 after just one minute into the first quarter. When the end of the first quarter rolled around the score was pretty tight, but the boys backslid to w ard s the end o f the second quarter. The Pirates w ith a score o f 46-26 defeated the Cardinals. This time their goal was to defeat the E nterprise O utlaw s. The Outlaws started the game with a lead. “With turnovers being a huge problem for us, we had a hard time keeping up (with Enterprise),” said lone freshm an M att Coleman. The boys were devastated when they lost the game 47-32. “It was a good g a m e ,” co n clu d ed lone’s Cory Peterson, “We all played a much better game than we did in our first game. I think we calm ed down a lot and played better as a team.” The trophy for the J V boys went to the Mac-Hi Pioneers. lone varsity basketball team suffers loss By Tori Heagy The lo n e v arsity boy’s basketball team played the Mac-Hi Pioneers for the B ask etb all B onanza Championship on Saturday, lone C ardinals cam e out stro n g in the first half, leading 25-23 by half time. Senior Kelly Thompson had 6 of his team-high 12 points in the second quarter. In the first half senior Tyler Brown played strong on a hurt ankle. In the second half Brown stayed in the locker room because of the injury. The Cardinals went out hard after the half and kept a 1-point lead by the end o f the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter senior starter Tony Bolin obtained a knee injury that took him out for the rest of the game. I n the end the C ard in als couldn't hold off the physical Mac-Hi Pioneers and lost 47-42.
