P rivate interment will be held at a la te r date at D ufur Community Cemetery. Norma “Dee” “Jean” Johnson, 85, a resident of Dufur, died at her home due to natural causes on Wednesday, July 13,2005. She was born S eptem ber 20, 1919, in Heppner, the older of two daughters to Charlie R. and G ladys M. (Van H orn) Beckett. She grew up on the family wheat ranch outside of Heppner and attended Liberty School, a school house b u ilt by her grandfather Beckett. She graduated from H eppner High School in 1937. During WWI1, She lived in Portland and worked in the shipyards and attended b eauty school. J e a n ’s working career found her at Kramer’s Store for several years and for the U nited States Forest Service for 20 plus years. She settled in Dufur with her husband and her daughters in 1949. She was a member of the Dufur Historical Society and enjoyed spending time with her family and always looked forward to trips to Kah-Nee-Tah with friends and family. Jean had also enjoyed being apart of the Air Force Ground Observers Corp. during the 1950’s, and had also been a Sky Watch assistant chief. Jean is survived by her sister, Florence McCarty and her husb an d , P aul, Portland; daughters, Nancy Hunt, Dufur, Judy Staehnke and her husband, David, The Dalles; grandchildren, Marti Hunt, The Dalles, Rich Hunt, Dufur, Sandy Loop and her husband, Larry, The Dalles, Mike Sigman and his wife, A drienne, M urrieta, CA, Mark Staehnke and his wife, Heather, Portland; great g ran d ch ild ren , Jena and Ryan Loop and Trevor and D ylan Sigm an. M arian Jane Brosnan, 90, of Heppner, died Tuesday, July 12,2005, at her home. Recitation of the rosary w a s F rid a y , July 15, at S t . P a tric k ’s C a th o lic C h u rc h . F u n e ra l Mass was Saturday, July 13, 2 0 0 5 , w i t h concluding Marian s e r v i c e Brosnan and burial at the Heppner Masonic Cemetery. One of six children, she was born August 25, 1914, at Independence to Floyd and Ada Tilson Good. She grew up and attended schools at Independence, then a tten d ed O regon N orm al School at M onmouth for tw o years before accepting a teaching position at Lena School near Heppner. She boarded with John and Z etta B rosnan while teaching at Lena and eventually became a part of th e ir fam ily w hen she m arried th eir son, Jerry B rosnan, on M arch 28, 1936, at Heppner. T he co u p le b u ilt their home on Buttercreek where they raised sheep and later, cattle. She briefly returned to the classroom as a su b stitu te te ac h e r at Heppner. She was said to have maintained a quiet nature throughout her life as she tended cam ps in the mountains, tended ill sheep and calves and cooked for sheep shearing crews and ranch hands and led students in the classroom. She was an active m em ber o f St. P a tric k ’s Catholic Church, had been a member of the CowBelles Association and a volunteer at the Morrow County Fair. She en jo y ed being su rro u n d ed by p eo p le, e sp e c ia lly her ex ten d ed E astern O regon fam ily w hich included her best friend H elen Currin and, more recently, her neighbors at St. P a tric k ’s S enior Apartments. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Brosnan, in 1991, a sister and two brothers. S urvivors include her children, daughter, Joann W eister o f H eppner, and sons, John Brosnan, and his wife, Charlotte of Hubbard, E J la d ltL <z/?u£y <z/?lng Eddie Brosnan and his wife, Lorraine, and Dan Brosnan and his wife, Doris, all of Heppner; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Jeremy is a 2001 graduate of lone High School and a 2005 graduate of Colorado State University with a B.A. in Politics and a B.S. in Soil and Crop Sciences. The couple plans a small family wedding on September 17, 2005, in Rocky Mountain National Park. New bench installed by museum A new bench was donated to the city of Heppner and has been installed in front of the Morrow County Museum in Heppner. The wooden bench was made by woodworker Bob DeSpain o f H eppner and donated by Joyce Dinkins’ daughter. Joyce, a Heppner resident, recently passed away. The bench replaces two benches that were in the site previously, but had been damaged. Fran M ain ella, director of the National Park Service (NPS), will be on hand to celebrate the grand opening, accompanied by N atio n al Park S ervice regional director Jon Jarvis and John Day Fossil Beds N ational M onum ent su p erin ten d e n t Jim Hammett. Oregon and U.S. congressmen and senators may be in attendance, though c o n firm a tio n s have not arrived as of this date. The Thom as C ondon P aleo n to lo g y Center, which houses the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument Visitor Center and Fossil Museum, has now been completed. Mainella will speak about the opening o f the new paleontology center and the 2 ,5 0 0 -sq u are-fo o t fossil museum. The park is located in the picturesque John Day R iver region o f eastern Oregon, and contains a well- preserved and diverse fossil record of plants and animals, including the dawn redwood (Metasequoia), the recently designated Oregon State fossil. The world-renowned fossil beds contain fossils spanning more than 40 of the 65 million years of the age o f m am m als. A nnual visitation to the monument is in ex cess o f 110,000 people. It is lo cated at milepost 122 on State Route 19, 16 m iles south of Kimberly and nine miles west of Dayville, OR. Complimentary refresh m en ts will be provided. Food service for lunch will be offered at the monument as a local school fund raiser (there are no restaurants within 30 miles).
