The honors diploma, which was designed to offer “ incentive for students to take challenging courses throughout their high school tenure,” reward “students who challenge themselves academically,” and provide “ students with distinction when applying for college a d m itta n ce and scholarships,” changes the c re d it and g rad e point average requirements. The honors diploma re q u ire s fo u r c re d its in language arts, three each in m ath, science and social scien ce, tw o in fo reign language, one each in health, PE, caree r ed and technology ed, one in an ad v an ced m ath co u rse, science or social science and six electives, for a total o f 26 credits. Twenty-three credits are currently required for a regular diploma Students receiving the honors diploma must maintain a minimum gpa of 3:25 through JtiHe 2007; which changes to a minimum 3.5 gpa after June 2007 or a 3.25 gpa or better with an 1100 SAT score or 23 ACT score. Students must earn a state-issued Certificate o f Initial Mastery and have no Ds or Fs on their transcripts. If th e h onors diploma is approved by the board this spring, it could be aw ard ed at next y e a r’s graduation at Heppner High School and Riverside High School and at th e 2007 graduation at Irrigon High School. Thompson and his wife have p u rc h a se d a hom e in Heppner. They have three children. -a ccep ted the resignation o f maintenance supervisor Howard Sheets. The maintenance department was recently reorganized and m ost duties relegated to fa c ilitie s m a in ten an ce c o o rd in a to rs and maintenance teams. -h eard from B u rro w s th at an ADA co m p lian ce statem e n t concerning accessibility will be included in the board goals -le a rn e d from Burrows that bids for the new ag building at Irrigon Jr./Sr. High School will be opened on May 18. -heard a brief report from Burrows concerning the Irrigon sewer project. Burrows said that manpower and equipm ent could be supplied, with the cost o f the pipe the rem aining responsibility. He said the sc h o o l’s p o rtio n o f the project, which was originally b eliev ed to be in the neighborhood of $100,000, could be reduced to the $25,000 range. However, the district and the city have yet to meet to negotiate the issue -heard from board m em ber C raig M iles co n cern in g th e O reg o n School Systems Excellence Initiative, which, says Miles, will result in “transparent board goals” and build trust betw een th e b o ard and a d m in istra tio n , and administration and teachers.
