Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 20,2003 - T! ¡REC Mustangs beat Tigerscots By Rick Paullus The H eppner Mustang baseball team took advantage o f 12 W eston- McEwen errors to beat the T ig ersco ts 10-6 on Thursday, April 14 in Athena to open the Columbia Basin C onference season The gam e w as o rig in ally scheduled for Tuesday but it had to be delayed due to a rain and hail storm shortly before game time that made the field unplayable The Mustangs, 1-0 in the CBC and 7-2 overall, will be at Stanfield for a crucial doubleheader on Friday, April 22 and at home for another important CBC game against Pilot Rock on Tuesday, April 26 at 4:30 pm The M ustangs got on the board in the second inning when Nick Christman and Quinn Peck reached on errors, Dan Basile scored them with a double, then Kyle Carlson and Jode Coil each had tw o -o u t RBI singles to make it 4-0. They added another run in the third when Christman again reached on an error, went to second on a Basile single and scored on a Nacho Elguezabal single but the Tigerscots came back with five runs in the bottom half to tie it at 5-5. The Mustangs took the lead for good in the fourth when Coil singled, stole second and scored as Kory Paullus reached on an error Christman and Peck walked, Paullus scored on a wild pitch and Basile had an RBI single They made it 10-5 in the fifth when Matt McCabe reached on an error, stole second and scored on two more throwing errors. Coil hit a blo o p double and scored as Josh G utierrez reached on an error The T ig ersco ts added a run in the seventh, but the lead w as never threatened Gutierrez came on in relief in the fourth pitching two scoreless innings to pick up the win, with Coil coming in for the sixth and seventh to pick-up the save Basile was three for four with three RBI. HR-none Community shows support for dance students mirrors, but had enough left The students of the H ep p n er class o f the P erform ing A rts of Hermiston held a bake sale Friday, April 15 and raised $652. The sale was to raise money for mirrors for their studio at the M orrow County Fairgrounds With the support o f the community they were not only able to purchase the over to purchase sweatshirts with logos “I have never seen such community support,” said Elyshia Rennison, dance in stru c to r and ow ner o f P erform in g A rts of H erm iston She also commented that that much support had not even been seen in H erm iston when fundraisers are held Pitching carries Mustangs to sweep of Vikings By Rick Paullus Senior pitchers Josh G u tierrez and Jode Coil combined for 25 strikeouts, three walks, three hit batters and ju st tw o runs in 14 innings to help the Heppner Mustang baseball team to a 6-2, 3-0 sweep of the visiting U m atilla V ikings in Columbia Basin Conference play on Saturday, April 16. The Mustangs, 3-0 in the CBC and 9-2 overall, will be at Stanfield for a critical CBC d o u b leh ead er on Friday, April 22 beginning at 11 a m before being at home for another important league game against Pilot Rock on Tuesday, April 26 at 4:30 Gutierrez went two for four with a home run, Paullus had two RBI, Coil scored twice and McCabe walked three times In the night cap. Coil would get all the runs he would need in the third inning when Matt Kenny and Coil singled and Paullus hit a long homerun to left-center for a 3-0 lead Coil made it stand up as he finished with a no hitter, strik in g ou t 11, walking three and hit one for a complete game win Paullus went two for three with the homerun and three RBI and Kenny and pm. In the seventh, with one out and one on, Peck threw out the runner trying to steal second and Carlson struck the batter out to end the game Carlson struck out five, walked two and hit one in his seven innings o f work.
