K ath erin e Lindstrom gave a history o f the lone Topic Club, which is celebrating its 75th year as an lone organization The Topic Club was founded in June 1928 by some farm women living on the north side o f lone This was during the economic d ep ressio n and sev ere drought of the 1930s. The farm women first called their group the N orth lone Im provem ent Society. M em bers w ere Vera Rietmann, Elaine Rietmann, Ruth Shane, Beulah Mankin, Sylva Gorger, Anne S mouse, Leona C h risto p h erso n , Blanche Lindstrom and Elsie Gross. The group met to socialize and review books that they had read This lead to the desire for a town library, which they decided to sponsor in 1933. They have been the sole sponsors o f the lone Library ever since The group found a home for the library in a number o f places during the years It was housed in the Bill Swanson store for some tim e and co m p letely destroyed by fire in 1949. The library finally found a perm anent home when the lone City Hall was com pleted in 1952 and a room was set aside for it at that time. M cC abe w as a homemaker but her activities were numerous. She became a 4-H leader in 1944 and was with the program for about 40 y ears She w as an excellent seam stress and spent a lot o f time at her sewing machine, making everything from clothes to quilts, and was involved with the “ Sew it w ith W ool” contest and the Extension Service for years. She liked puttering in the yard and enjoyed her plan ts and flow ers. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and liked to travel. She was an active member o f the Historical Society and a supporter of the lone community. Survivors include her ch ild ren and th eir spouses, Lola Ann and Jim P etty jo h n o f P en d leto n , Alvin and DeAnna McCabe o f N ehalem , G race and Leland McKinney o f Lake Havasu City, AZ, Chris and Pete D evens o f East Northport, N.Y., and Doris and Ron Berry o f Reno, NV; 18 grandchildren, 31 great- g ran d ch ild ren , and four great-great-grandchildren M e m o r i a l contributions may be made to the C ancer Society, Pioneer M emorial Home Health or a charity o f choice.
