She grew up on the family’s
Rhea Creek homestead with
her younger brother, Bryce
The family moved a
couple o f times, but always
returned to the homestead
She attended grade school in
one-room school houses.

founded in June 1928 by
some farm women living on
the north side o f lone This
was during the economic
d ep ressio n and sev ere
drought of the 1930s. The
farm women first called their
group the N orth lone

to the desire for a town
library, which they decided
to sponsor in 1933. They
have been the sole sponsors
o f the lone Library ever
since The group found a
home for the library in a
number o f places during the
years It was housed in the
Bill Swanson store for some
tim e
and co m p letely
destroyed by fire in 1949.

women, not being ones to
give up, rebuilt their book

found a perm anent home
when the lone City Hall was
com pleted in 1952 and a
room was set aside for it at
that time. The city continues
to assist th e library
financially each year Over
200 w om en have been
members o f the Topic Club
during the years and the
library remains a vital part o f
the town o f lone due to their
faithful interest in providing
books for the community’s
education and entertainment

she married Lonnie McCabe
at Heppner They had five
children
They lived on the
McCabe ranch near lone,
raising grain and a few head
o f cattle
Mr M cC abe died
March 2, 1974.
M cC abe w as a
homemaker but her activities
were numerous. She became
a 4-H leader in 1944 and was
with the program for about
40 y ears She w as an
excellent seam stress and
spent a lot o f time at her
sewing machine, making
everything from clothes to
quilts, and was involved with
the “ Sew it w ith W ool”
contest and the Extension
Service for years.
She liked puttering
in the yard and enjoyed her
plan ts and flow ers. She
enjoyed working crossword
puzzles and liked to travel.
She was an active
member o f the Historical
Society and a supporter of
the lone community.
Survivors include
her ch ild ren and th eir
spouses, Lola Ann and Jim

Alvin and DeAnna McCabe
o f N ehalem , G race and
Leland McKinney o f Lake
Havasu City, AZ, Chris and
Pete D evens o f East

great-great-grandchildren
