Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 2, 2005 - SEVEN HHS National Honor Society members help Shamrockettes kick their way to Portland The dancers o f the at Senior Center Shamrockettes Dance Team were kicking up a storm for a Kick-a-thon fluid raiser on Feb 18 The girls are saving up to fund a trip to Portland in March for the Oregon Dance/Drill Competition The team cannot perform because they are not school affiliated, however, they are going to watch and learn and then decide what the team will look like for the future The team has intensively trained since Christmas for the Kick-a- t h o n . On Wednesday, Feb 23, Heppner High School’s N ational H onor Society students helped serve lunch at the Senior Center Debbie Basil and Cindy Kennedy prepared the lunch. The seven m embers o f the National Honor Society who attended the lunch served pizza, vegetables and dessert to the senior citizens. As part of an effort to show appreciation to the community for their support through out the years, the National Honor Society of HHS has been involved in vario u s v o lu n teer and community service activities As President of the National H onor Society Cara Kennedy said, “What better way to help the community, by serving lunch to our most im p o rtan t com m unity m e m b e rs.” The seven stu d en ts enjoyed the experience so much that they want to continue to do it as a monthly activity Legion continues building improvements consisted o f 200- 300 kicks over the p ra c tice hour The Kellee Jones- d a n c e r s January challenged Shamrockette of the coach, the Month. Jodi Chapa, to do kicks with them “ Back in the West Albany H i-S teppers, 20 years ago, 550 kicks was a breeze One hundred forty- four is all I could kick out today, maybe more next year,” said Chapa The girls collected sponsors for their kicks, either receiving flat fees or 1-5 cents per kick The sh o u ld er-h ig h -m in im u m kicks were all performed to music and done non-stop H H S 2005 baseball schedule H ep p n er High School has announced its 2005 baseball schedule as of Feb 28, 2005: (L-R): lone Legion Com m ander Bob Baker received a donation of $1500 from Bank of Eastern O regon- lone branch m anager Sharon Rietm ann, along with Chairwom an o f the restoration project Jean Jepsen and Legion Auxiliary President Irene Holtz. The lone American Legion Hall is nearing the end o f its restoration phase as members o f the Legion and Auxiliary have worked for the past five years restoring flooring, windows, heating systems and other p ro jects Through com m unity su p p o rt and g ran t writing a sundry amount o f projects have been able to be completed The list o f projects began in 2000 when it was determined that many cracks in the hall’s wood flooring needed to be repaired in order to maintain the floor As the group was working on the floors, it was determined that the old oil furnaces and flues were unsafe To help with the needed funding to complete the projects a capital fluids campaign was begun and Vincent McElligott offered his services to help Jean Jepsen, project chairwoman, write grants A grant from the Meyer Memorial Trust along with the gained funds helped pay for the replacement of the heating system along with new windows, doors and some insulation The following year, the b a th ro o m s and new fixtures were updated and vinyl and carpeting was laid The bar area was also updated to becom e a permanent fixture Food Handlers class no longer available in Heppner The Food Handler's classes are no longer being offered by the State Health Departm ent in the area However, food handler’s cards are still required for people who handle food This includes vendors and groups preparing food or meals for the upcoming St Patrick's Day Celebration in Heppner A couple of options are available for th o se interested in obtaining a food handler’s card The course may be taken online or by mail through the Oregon R estaurant A ssociation Their w ebsite is www ora o rg /e d u c a tio n / education fhonline htm Food handler’s cards are good for three years and cost $10 In 2003, a grant from W ildhorse F oundation helped repair the sub-floor and put new vinyl in the kitchen and meeting area The next and newest phase o f the restoration project is to bring the building up to electrical code and install new lighting throughout the hall With these improvements the hall should be completed Funds for the final projects are being brought in th ro u g h com m unity d o n atio n s along with a second grant from the Wildhorse Foundation Also, as a way to help gain more funding, the Legion and Auxiliary is holding a Poker and Bingo fundraiser on March 6. # The fundraiser will include Texas Hold ‘Em, Bingo, food and a silent a u ctio n Everyone is welcome to attend the event, which will begin at 4 p m at the Hall Those wishing to join the poker tournament should sign-up between 3 and 3:45 p m The Legion and Auxiliary appreciates all the community support and the many grants that have been received “The hall should be in good shape now for many more years,’’ said Jepsen c The top kicker was Jodessa Chapa with 480 kicks. “I really want to go on this trip,” said Jodessa The other team members in their order of kicks were, Kolleen C hapa- 320; Carrie H aguew ood- 202; Katie Tayloe- 107; Amber Gray 89; and Ashley Wolff- 74 Not all team members were able to com pete due to injuries “ Even sickness h a sn ’t stopped the girls, maybe limited the number of kicks, but not their spirit for helping their team,” added Coach Chapa Even though she was unable to compete due to an injury, Kellee Jones, Shamrockette of the Month for January, helped hold arms during the kick-a-thon “Kellee has showed up to practices to run music and stretch, participated in H H S 2005 golf schedule announced H eppner High Varsity: Monday.
