SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 23,2005 Mustangs take third by beating Vikings By Rick Paullus Rietmann hit a 3-pointer at the bu zzer to give the Mustangs a 16-13 lead after one S arah P rice hit a short jumper and Orr scored off a pass from Mitchell to make it 20-15 Rietmann hit another 3-pointer to make it 23-17 and Regi Seitz hit a 3- pointer to give the Mustangs a 27-19 lead at the half Terra Wilson scored off a drive early in the third, Rietmann hit a 3-pointer to make it 32-23, then Price hit one o f two free throws and threw up a desperate 30 foot shot to end the third that w ent in and give the Mustangs a 36-26 lead The V ikings got within 37-31, but Seitz hit one o f two free throws and Rietmann hit two o f two to make it 40-31, Southworth hit three o f four to make it 43-34, but the Vikings went on a 4-1 run to get within 44- 38 Rietmann then hit four of four free throws in the last minute to preserve the win. A fter the Vikings came back to take the lead, Southworth and M egan O rr scored o ff rebounds, the Vikings hit two free throws to tie it, but tw o steals. The Vikings pulled out to a 3-0 lead before Terra Wilson hit a jumper to get the Mustangs on the board and Susan Southworth tied it at 5-5 by converting a three-point play. The Vikings scored late to take a 7-5 lead after one Lyndi Patton hit a 3- pointer to open the second and Shanna Rietmann scored o ff a reb o u n d and Southworth scored inside to give the Mustangs a 12-7 lead The Vikings came back with eight straight before Megan Orr hit a 3-pointer to tie it, but Umatilla took a 17- 15 lead at the half. The Vikings went on a 10-3 run, Southworth hit a free throw and Linsey Mitchell hit a short jumper to take a 27-18 lead Orr got a steal and lay-in, Southworth hit one o f two free throws and Patton hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to get the Mustangs to within 29- 24 at the end o f three Wilson scored inside to start the fourth, then Orr hit tw o free th ro w s and scored off a rebound, Wilson hit a long ju m p e r and Mitchell hit two free throws to give the Mustangs a 34- 29 lead The Vikings finally scored to make it 34-31 with 49.8 seconds left, but Sarah Price checked a shot in the lane, grabbdd the rebound and was fouled with 24 3 seconds left. She hit one o f two free throws to make it down and scored with 12 seconds left, but the Mustangs were able to run out the clock and take the win. Sw anson enjoyed his team ’s positive attitude and willingness to w ork hard and predicted success for the future. The Irrigon game was an opportunity for the reserves to log more playing time than usual. The J ’s kept in close in the first, trailing ju s t 10-8, but saw the K nights slip away in the second quarter where lone was outscored 17-5, giving Irrigon a halftime lead o f 27- 13 The third quarter was a cold one for the Cards but they came back strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 21-18 for the final margin. Dan Long led the team in scoring w ith 11 followed by Justin Archer w ith seven T aylor McElligott and Paul Hams each had six and A lan R ietm ann and W illiam Bergstrom each scored four. Long was the rebound leader for lone with eight while Rietmann had three assists and steals for the team. . “ We played mostly o u r reserv es the w hole g a m e,” said C oach Swanson. “Will Bergstrom, William M eulink, D alton Campbell and Justin Archer gave it everything they had and I was really proud o f them The JV team has been a great group o f players.” Swanson also noted that Irrigon has a great start to their program, as this is their first year in existence Rietmann named to Pacific University Dean’s List Shelley Rietmann o f Heppner has been named to the D ean’s List at Pacific University in Forest Grove To make the Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 graded hours and earn an academ ic grade point average o f 3.7 or higher R ietm ann is the daughter o f Mark and Tami Rietmann o f Heppner Hitting just 10 o f 49 shots, including three o f 27 in th e second half, the Heppner Mustangs fell to the Sherman County Huskies 38-23 on Friday, Feb. 18 in the District 7 2A basketball tournament at the Pendleton Convention Center.
