Mustangs take third by beating Vikings

Rietmann hit a 3-pointer at

Mustangs a 16-13 lead after
one

off a pass from Mitchell to
make it 20-15 Rietmann hit
another 3-pointer to make it
23-17 and Regi Seitz hit a 3-
pointer to give the Mustangs
a 27-19 lead at the half
Terra Wilson scored
off a drive early in the third,
Rietmann hit a 3-pointer to
make it 32-23, then Price hit
one o f two free throws and
threw up a desperate 30 foot
shot to end the third that
w ent in and give the
Mustangs a 36-26 lead
The V ikings got
within 37-31, but Seitz hit
one o f two free throws and
Rietmann hit two o f two to
make it 40-31, Southworth
hit three o f four to make it
43-34, but the Vikings went
on a 4-1 run to get within 44-
38 Rietmann then hit four of
four free throws in the last
minute to preserve the win.
The Mustangs hit 12
o f 17 free throw s in the
fourth quarter as all o f their
points came from the line
Rietmann had four
rebounds and three assists to
go with her 21 points, with
Southw orth adding seven
points, five rebounds and
Shanna Rietmann hit
all four o f her 3-point field
goal attempts and seven o f
eight free throws finishing
with 21 points to lead the

The Vikings pulled
out to a 3-0 lead before Terra
Wilson hit a jumper to get
the Mustangs on the board
and Susan Southworth tied
it at 5-5 by converting a
three-point play. The Vikings
scored late to take a 7-5 lead
after one
Lyndi Patton hit a 3-
pointer to open the second
and Shanna Rietmann scored

and
Southworth scored inside to
give the Mustangs a 12-7
lead The Vikings came back
with eight straight before
Megan Orr hit a 3-pointer to
tie it, but Umatilla took a 17-
15 lead at the half.
The Vikings went on
a 10-3 run, Southworth hit
a free throw and Linsey
Mitchell hit a short jumper
to take a 27-18 lead Orr got
a steal
and
lay-in,

the Mustangs to within 29-
24 at the end o f three

Price checked a shot in the

seconds left. She hit one o f
two free throws to make it
down and scored with 12
seconds left, but the
Mustangs were able to run
out the clock and take the
win.

The lone boys’ JV
team finished their season
Saturday, Feb. 12 with a loss
to Irrigon 61-38, but Coach
Jim Swanson deemed the
season
a
success
n ev erth eless. Sw anson
enjoyed his team ’s positive
attitude and willingness to
w ork hard and predicted
success for the future.
The Irrigon game
was an opportunity for the
reserves to log more playing
time than usual. The J ’s kept
in close in the first, trailing
ju s t 10-8, but saw the
K nights slip away in the
second quarter where lone
was outscored 17-5, giving
Irrigon a halftime lead o f 27-
13 The third quarter was a
cold one for the Cards but
they came back strong in the
fourth quarter, outscoring
their opponents 21-18 for
the final margin.
Dan Long led the
team in scoring w ith 11
followed by Justin Archer
