FOUR - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 9,2005 Lady Cards win at Nixyaawii Cardinals defeat Golden Eagles lone JV boys take three wins The lo n e g irls ’ varsity saw their Big Sky w inning stre ak flashing b e fo re th e ir eyes last Tuesday, Feb 1 at Nixyaawii, trailing 34-32 entering the fourth quarter, but thanks to an offensive spurt and several key players fouling out for Nixyaawii, they managed to keep the streak alive, winning the game 44-38 The game was tight the entire way. The Lady Cards trailed at the end of one 15-9 and held a slim 23- 22 lead at the half It was still within two after three, but lone took advantage of their hosts’ foul trouble to pick up the offensive pace, o u tsco rin g the G olden E agles 12-4 in the last quarter Nixyaawii finished the gam e w ith ju st four players on the floor Amber Patton had an outstanding effort, scoring 25 points and pulling down 11 rebounds Sara Peck was dom inant on the boards, tallying 19 rebounds She also scored four points Also scoring for the Cards were Emily Rietmann with five points, Jenny Griffith and Kylee Svetich with three p o ints each and Kaylee Palmateer and Ashly Grams with two each "This game was a lot closer than 1 would have liked,” said Coach Ryan Rudolf We trailed most of the game but the girls didn't give up and we were finally able to pull ahead in the fourth quarter Nixyaawii has improved a lot since the first time we played them I give them a lot o f credit for playing us tough ” Lady Cards end winning streak The lone Lady Cards split their games over the weekend, winning a tough contest against Arlington at home on Friday, Feb 4 and losing to a strong Dufur squad on the road on Saturday, Feb 5 The loss brought the winning streak that started in early January to an end but the Cardinals still have an enviable Big Sky record of 11-1. Their season mark stands at 12-7. Arlington kept the game within striking distance for the first three quarters, trailing just 6-9 after one, 19- 11 at the half and 27-19 after three But the Lady Cards came up big in the fourth quarter, reeling off 21 points to the Honker’s 10 to pull away for the final 48-29 win Sara Peck led the Cardinals with 16 points and 14 rebounds Amber Patton had 15 points and 15 rebounds Also scoring for the Lady Cardinals were Kylee Svetich with seven, Jenny Griffith and Ashly Grams each with four and Kayla LaRue with two Coach Ryan Rudolf com m ended the fine defensive play o f Griffith, Grams and Emily Rietmann “We did a great job o f using o u r height adv an tag e against A rlin g to n ,” said C oach Rudolf “They hustled a lot and kept the game close until the fourth quarter We played good team defense and really got our offense going in the final quarter to put the game out o f reach.” On Saturday at D ufur, the Lady C ards struggled against the fifth- ranked team in the state D ufur held the C ards sco reless in the second period to hold a commanding 34-6 lead at halftime Things improved only slightly in the second half as the Rangers coasted to a 62-25 win G ram s scored 14 points to lead the Cards Patton was held to just three points Rietmann scored four and Peck and Svetich each had two “We just didn’t come ready to play,” said Coach Rudolf “ If you want to be able to compete with Dufur, you have to play your best game and this obviously wasn’t our best game Ashly played a good gam e offensively but we needed more than one girl in double figures I think this loss might help us refocus and get ready for the D istrict Tournament ” M agnetic Door Signs Order Yours Here Heppner Gazette-Times 676-9228 A sluggish second quarter kept Nixyaawii in the game early but the lone Cardinals finished strong to defeat the Golden Eagles 63- 46 in a gam e played in Mission on Tuesday, Feb 1 The Cards had a high scoring first quarter, putting up 26 points to their opponents 16 However, lone cooled off to only score nine in the second, allowing Nixyaawii to pull within seven at the half, 35-28 But in the second half, the Cardinals rolled, scoring 13 in the third and 15 in the fourth for the final winning margin Four players were in double figures led by Tyler Raible w ith 15 points, shooting 75 percent from the floor Tyler Brown scored 13, Tony Bolin had 12 and Nick Christman added 10 points Brown was the team leader in rebounding with 13 and assists with five Bolin, Christman and Brown each had three steals, helping the Cards to a 15-6 advantage in that area C o ach D ennis Stefani praised the play o f Raible who had one his best games o f the year with 15 points and nine rebounds .“This was really a fun game to play,” said Coach Stefani. “The crowd really gets into the game over there and creates a great atmosphere.” Cards win two over weekend The C ardinals logged tw o w ins last w eekend, defeating Arlington at home on Friday night, Feb 4 and Dufur on the road on Saturday, Feb 5. The wins m ove the Cardinals record to 10-2 in the Big Sky and 15-6 for the season The Arlington game was close early, with the Cards leading just 15-12 after one quarter, but the Cards opened the game up in the second, scoring 15 while holding the Honkers to five Leading 30-17 at the half, the Cards lengthened the lead in the second half and finished the game 62-37. Nick Christman led the Cardinals in scoring with 16, followed by Tony Bolin with 13 Also scoring for the Cards was Tyler Raible with nine, Tyler Brown and Dan Long with six each, Alan Rietm ann with four and Kelly Thom pson, A rthur Ekstrom, Kyle Palmateer and John Walton with two each Raible led the rebounding effort with 10. “ I thought we had control the whole game,” said Coach Dennis Stefani “ We didn’t play our best basketball but we did play well enough to get the win.” On Saturday night, the Cardinals used red-hot shooting to overpower the Rangers, 79-38 Shooting 49 3 percent from the floor as a team, the Cards led 21- 7 after one quarter and 42- 19 at the half The Rangers couldn’t muster much more o f a fight in the second half, getting outscored by lone 23-6 in the third quarter before the Cards coasted home for the win. Thompson lit up the scoreboard with 22 points, shooting 10 o f 15 from the field Other Cards scoring in double figures were Bolin with 13, (sh o o tin g 50 percent). Brown with 12 (shooting 50 percent) and Raible with 12 (shooting 66.7 percent) Brown led the team with 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals. “This was one of the best games we have played since early this season,” said Coach Stefani. “It was nice to see us get back in sync.” IMS “ B” team girls win against Arlington V ictoria H eagy had tw o Bv Beth M orter each The lone M iddle School g irls ’ “ B” team stayed on the winning track against Arlington last Friday, Feb 4 lone jumped out to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and lengthened the lead to 10-4 by halftime The Cardinals scored 12 points in the second half while holding the visitors to just two. The final score was 22-6 in favor o f lone Lynzee Sjurset led the C ardinals with eight points. REALTOR Di 541 676-9228 - Past Real Estate columns and property' listings are available at h k k '. heppner.net/heritage The lone boys’ JV team finished the week with th re e w ins including co n v in cin g w ins over Nixyaawii at Mission and Umatilla JV at home along with a squeaker at Dufur With three games left to go, the JV team’s record is 9-7 The Cardinals struck early at Nixyaawii, jumping out to a 20-11 first quarter lead The scoring pace cooled slightly in the second quarter but lone still took a 31-19 lead to the locker room at the h a lf The opponents out scored the Cards in the third period but lone finished strong for the final winning margin o f 62- 48 Dan Long led the team with 26 points and 19 rebounds. Paul Hams also had a good effort with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. The remainder of the scoring was done by Justin Archer with six, William Bergstrom with five, Kip Krebs and Kyle Palmateer with four each and Taylor McElligott and John Walton with two each lone outrebounded their hosts 42- 21 . “They had a small gym to play in but we handled it very well,” said Coach Jim Swanson “We played very aggressive at both ends. Dan Long had an overall great game and Kyle, Paul and Justin played some very good defense.” The game against the Umatilla JVs was close for the first quarter but lone held the visitors scoreless in the second to take a 24-13 lead at the half. The C ards continued to build on that lead, winning 45-31. Alan Rietmann and Long shared scoring honors with nine each followed by Palmateer with eight. Archer w ith seven, Hams and Dalton Campbell with three each and Walton, McElligott and William Meulink with two each Long led the team w ith 10 rebounds w hile Rietmann tallied four steals to lead that category. Archer and Rietmann each had three assists. “ The kids played very good team ball,” said Coach Swanson. “William Meulink worked very hard on both offense and defense It was great to see him get his first home basket in the game,” he said The Dufur game was a tight, low-scoring game that saw even scoring in two o f the quarters. It was the second and third periods where the Cards were able to eke out their four-point margin o f error, 42-38 R ietm ann led the team in scoring w ith 12 points, despite playing just two quarters. Also scoring for the Cards were Krebs and Long with eight each, Walton with six and Archer and Palm ateer with four each K rebs led the rebounding effort with 11 boards while Archer led in steals and assists with four each. Coach Swanson was pleased with the effort. “Our kids are having fun and they always seem to find a way to win. Alan had a great game for only playing two quarters and Kip did a great job on the boards,” he said. IMS girls “A” team lose two By Beth M orter The lone M iddle School g irls ’ “ A” team traveled to Echo for a two gam e tournam ent on Saturday, Feb 5. In the first game, the Cardinals played the Helix Grizzles. In the first quarter, the Grizzles outscored the Cardinals by five points with a score o f 9-4 By halftime, the Cardinals had scored five points and the Grizzles had scored 14 points leaving the score at 23-9, w ith the Grizzles in the lead In the third quarter, the Cardinals sadly scored no points, while the Grizzles scored nine, the lead grow ing on the C ardinals. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals put up a fight and scored 10 points, while the Grizzles scored six, but fell to a defeat, with a final score o f 38-19, the Grizzles coming out with the victory The top scorer for the C ardinals was Beth Morter with seven points. Tiana Camarillo and Brenna Rietmann both scored four points and Heather Wiggers and Lynzee Sjurset both scored two points “ We played with Helix really well this time,” said C oach Lynn Dee Ramos “I was really pleased with the improvements that we made.” The second game the C ard in als played in the tournament was against the Echo Cougars. In the first q u arter, the C ardinals outscored the Cougars by one point and the score was 3-2. In the second quarter, the Cardinals only managed one point and the Cougars made seven, taking the lead by halftime with a score of 9-4. In the third quarter, both team s scored six points, leaving the score at 15-10, with the Cougars in the lead In the fourth quarter, the C ougars o u tsco red the Cardinals scoring six points, while the Cardinals only scored three The final score of the game was 21-13 and the Cougars had won. The leading scorers for the C ardinals w ere R ietm ann and B eka D esB o u illo n s w ith five p oints each C am arillo scored two points and Tori Heagy scored one point “The girls were a little tired from playing back- to-back games, but they came out and played to the best o f their ability,” said Coach Ramos “We had a lot o f looks at the basket, but just couldn’t seem to get them to drop in I was proud o f how the girls played ” Morrow County Gun Club news On Sunday, Feb 6, 20 shooters enjoyed a sunny pre-Super Bowl shoot In singles, 16 yards, Mike Goreman hit 24 out of 25 shots Jeff C utsforth followed with 23 hits and Harvey Childers made 22. High lady for the day was Deona Hodges with 19 out of25 hits In junior shooting, Quinn Peck took nine out of 25 shots. In handicap, 20 yards, Cutsforth came in first with 24 out o f 25 shots Following was a tie between Rob Ashbeck, Dennis Peck and Childers with 22 out of 25 hits Rounding out the men was Lowell Turner with 20 shots Hodges was high lady again with 12 out o f 25 and Quinn Peck was junior shooter with 13 out o f 25.
