He was buried with military honors at W illam ette National Cemetery. Born on Aug. 15, 1924 at the family ranch in Sand Hollow near Heppner, Kenny was the son o f John and B ridget (M ollahan) Kenny and grandson of early M orrow County pioneers Michael and Mary (Doherty) Kenny. Among the earliest of Heppner’s Irish settlers, the Kenny and Doherty families em ig rated from C ounty Leitrim and Donegal, Ireland respectively in the 1880s to establish stock and wheat ranches Kenny was educated in the H eppner schools, graduating from Heppner High School in 1943. An active student, he held many positive memories o f those y ears in clu d in g his membership on the 1942 Heppner football team and its trip to the state championship game After graduation, he was drafted into the army and served in the 77th Infantry Division, fighting in the Pacific during W orld W ar II Kenny received a Bronze Star for bravery in the B attle o f Okinawa He attended Eastern Oregon College, graduating with a b ach elo r’s o f arts degree in education in 1950 and the U n iv ersity o f Oregon, where he earned a master’s degree in education in 1956. W hile atte n d in g college in LaGrande, he met Judith Keyes o f W heeler County. They married at St John’s Catholic Church in Condon on Aug 19, 1950 and settled in Fossil Kenny taught for five years in the Fossil Grade School and five years in Hermiston before moving to Lake Oswego where he taught seventh grade science and math for 23 years. A funeral mass was held Sept. 7, 2004, followed later by a gathering of family and friends in his honor. Born in Ireland, on Nov. 13, 1918, Mitchell was very fond o f Heppner and considered it his home away from home He enjoyed coming yearly to the St. Patrick’s Day festivities and had hoped to bring his children this coming year. Survivors include his wife, Claire Mitchell; his daughters, Joan Thomas, Maureen Mitchell and Cindy Muzio; his sisters, Kathleen M itchell and M argaret Prindle; his grandchildren, Tyler and Emily Thomas, Ryan and Molly Garrett and M adeleine M uzio; and a large extended family from the Bay Area, Oregon and Ireland T hose w ishing to honor his memory are asked to co n sid er m aking a donation to their charity of choice. Michael Hedman M ichael H edm an, 53, formerly o f Heppner, died Monday, Jan. 10 at Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland as the result o f a motor vehicle accident. He was also arrested on a Gilliam County warrant for Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle. Gomez was lodged at Umatilla County Jail, there were no local charges. -MCSO received a report from Beaverton PD that Lloyd Arthur Costello, 39, was arrested on an Irrigon Justice C ourt w arran t for F ailure to A p p ear/D riv in g w hile Suspended. Costello was lodged at W ashington County Jail. Jan. 8: M CSO arrested Elizabeth M. Weis, 30, on a Central Linn County w arrant for Contem pt o f Court. Weis was lodged at Umatilla County Jail with no local charges. Jan. 9: MCSO cited Robert Wade Eastep, 44, for Driving while Suspended- misdemeanor. The vehicle was impounded -MCSO received a report from Hermiston PD that Craig Dee Hibdon, 28, was arrested on a Morrow C ounty C ircuit C o u rt w arran t for F ailure to A p p ear/P o ssessio n o f a Controlled Substance II. -MCSO cited Joshua Brandon Richmond, 23, for Violation o f the Basic Rule, 74 mph in a 55 mph Safety Zone and No O p e rato r’s License. The vehicle was impounded Jan. 10: M CSO received a report from the Junction City PD that Bobby Gene Erwin, Jr., 48, was arrested by JCPD on local charges, with information received about an Irrigon Justice Court warrant for Failure to Pay Fine/Driving while Suspended. Erwin was lodged at Lane County Jail -M CSO arrested Kevin Wayne Smith, 31, on an Irrigon Justice C ourt warrant for Failure to Pay F in e/D riv in g w hile Suspended, w ith an ad d itio n al c ita tio n for Driving while Suspended The vehicle was impounded No school on MLK day T here will be no school on Monday, Jan 17 in observance o f M artin Luther King Day Due to the holiday, classes will be held on Friday, Jan 21 Order Magnetic Door Signs HERE Heppner Gazette-Times John M artin ez Frutos admitted to violation o f probation allegations for Possession o f a Controlled Substance Frutos’ probation was revoked and he was sentenced to 120 days in jail and 12 months probation G regory W ayne Terry w as co n v icted o f Unauthorized Use a Vehicle, a Class-C felony. Terry’s driver’s license was revoked fo r 90 days and he was sentenced to tw o years supervised probation, 30 days in jail and payment o f $916 in fines and fees. Darren W. Williams was convicted o f Menacing, a C lass-A m isdem eanor. Williams was sentenced to 90 suspended days in jail and 24 months bench probation. M atth ew B radley Tow nsend adm itted to v io latio n o f p ro b atio n allegations for Unlawful Use o f a M otor V ehicle Townsend’s probation was revoked and reinstated and he was sentenced to three days in jail, an extension o f one year on his probation and 20 hours community service. Shane Joseph Reeb was convicted o f Menacing, a C lass-A m isdem eanor. Reeb was sentenced to 180 suspended days in jail, one year bench probation and payment of $626 in fines and fees. Hank E Wetzel was found in v io la tio n o f probation and was sentenced to two suspended days in jail, with his probation revoked and reinstated on the same term s and co n d itio n s as previously imposed. Jam es B enjam in M urray w as found in v io latio n o f p ro b atio n M urray’s probations was revoked and reinstated with an extension o f one year from original expiration date. He was also sentenced to 30 days in jail. Investigation continuing in Irrigon death On Jan. 9, at 5:02 p.m., the M orrow County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a subject in Irrigon advising that a male subject, later identified as Tyler Dean Harris, 18, o f Umatilla, was lying on the ground near his pickup on D ivision Street near the in tersectio n o f Pheasant Lane The reporting party ap p ro ach ed H arris and reported it did not appear that he was breathing A M CSO d eputy was dispatched and arrived at the scene at 5:07 p.m., with the Irrigon ambulance responding at 5:11 p.m. The in itial in v e stig a tio n determined that Harris was deceased and appeared to have died from a single shot o f a firearm. Supervisors were dispatched to the scene and the M orrow C ounty D istrict A tto rn ey David Allen contacted the officers at the scene The investigation is ongoing but the preliminary investigation and interviews conducted at the scene do not indicate that Harris died as the result o f foul play. H a rris ’ fam ily contacted officers at the scene and he was tra n sp o rte d to B urns Mortuary in Hermiston The investigation is continuing and follow up in terv iew s are being conducted by members o f the M orrow C ounty Sheriff’s Office
