Kenny, 80, a former resident
o f the Heppner area, died
Dec 5, 2004 in Portland
A funeral mass was
held for him at Our Lady o f
the Lake Catholic Church in
Lake Oswego on Dec. 9. He
was buried with military
honors at W illam ette
National Cemetery.
Born on Aug. 15,
1924 at the family ranch in
Sand Hollow near Heppner,
Kenny was the son o f John
and B ridget (M ollahan)
Kenny and grandson of early
M orrow County pioneers
Michael and Mary (Doherty)
Kenny. Among the earliest of
Heppner’s Irish settlers, the
Kenny and Doherty families
em ig rated from C ounty
Leitrim and Donegal, Ireland
respectively in the 1880s to
establish stock and wheat
ranches
Kenny was educated
in the H eppner schools,
graduating from Heppner
High School in 1943. An
active student, he held many
positive memories o f those
y ears
in clu d in g
his
membership on the 1942
Heppner football team and
its trip to the state
championship game After
graduation, he was drafted
into the army and served in
the 77th Infantry Division,
fighting in the Pacific during
W orld W ar II Kenny
received a Bronze Star for
bravery in the B attle o f
Okinawa
He attended Eastern
Oregon College, graduating
with a b ach elo r’s o f arts
degree in education in 1950
and the U n iv ersity o f
Oregon, where he earned a
master’s degree in education
in 1956.
W hile atte n d in g
college in LaGrande, he met
Judith Keyes o f W heeler
County. They married at St
John’s Catholic Church in
Condon on Aug 19, 1950
and settled in Fossil Kenny
taught for five years in the
Fossil Grade School and five
years in Hermiston before
moving to Lake Oswego
where he taught seventh
grade science and math for
23 years.
He is survived by his
wife, Judy o f Lake Oswego;
children, Anna Kenny o f
Lake Oswego, Judith Kenny
(Tom Hubka) o f Milwaukee,
WI, Mary (Kent) Norville of
O regon C ity and Kevin
Kenny o f Lake O sw ego;
grandchildren, Joshua and
Jamie Norville o f Oregon

Mitchell
W ord has been
received that William Joseph
M itchell, 85, o f San
Francisco, CA, an annual St.
P a tric k ’s Day atten d ee,
passed away, Sept. 5, 2004
in San Francisco.
A funeral mass was
held Sept. 7, 2004, followed
later by a gathering of family
and friends in his honor.
Born in Ireland, on
Nov. 13, 1918, Mitchell was
very fond o f Heppner and
considered it his home away
from home He enjoyed
coming yearly to the St.
Patrick’s Day festivities and
had hoped to bring his
children this coming year.
Survivors include his
wife, Claire Mitchell; his
daughters, Joan Thomas,
Maureen Mitchell and Cindy
Muzio; his sisters, Kathleen
M itchell and M argaret
Prindle; his grandchildren,
Tyler and Emily Thomas,
Ryan and Molly Garrett and
M adeleine M uzio; and a
large extended family from
the Bay Area, Oregon and
Ireland

honor his memory are asked

donation to their charity of
choice.

died Monday, Jan. 10 at
Legacy Emanuel Hospital in
Portland as the result o f a
motor vehicle accident.
A memorial service

15 at 2 p.m.

Investigation

Irrigon death
On Jan. 9, at 5:02
p.m., the M orrow County
Sheriff’s Office received a
911 call from a subject in
Irrigon advising that a male
subject, later identified as
Tyler Dean Harris, 18, o f
Umatilla, was lying on the
ground near his pickup on
D ivision Street near the
in tersectio n o f Pheasant
Lane The reporting party
ap p ro ach ed H arris and
reported it did not appear
that he was breathing
A M CSO d eputy
was dispatched and arrived
at the scene at 5:07 p.m.,
with the Irrigon ambulance
responding at 5:11 p.m. The

determined that Harris was
deceased and appeared to
have died from a single shot
o f a firearm. Supervisors
were dispatched to the scene
and the M orrow C ounty
D istrict A tto rn ey David
Allen contacted the officers
at the scene
The investigation is
ongoing but the preliminary
investigation and interviews
conducted at the scene do
not indicate that Harris died
as the result o f foul play.
