The musicians and their d ire c to r are commended for their efforts to bring good entertainment to our citizens (s) John Edmundson Heppner Music strikes note in lone To the Editor: We were so pleased to attend the Willow Creek Sym phony and Singers concert last night in lone We are fortunate to have such a talent performing here in our small com m unity. The sym phony and ch o ru s conducted by R Lee Friese related well to the packed audience in bringing back fam iliar m elodies o f yesteryear A group o f the older “ k id s” from the W illow Creek Assisted Living sat in a reserv ed sectio n and listened intently to music that brought back memories o f old movies and memories of their more active years. All in all, our hats our off to the Willow Creek Symphony and Singers for an evening o f solid enjoyment for young and old alike For those o f you who missed it, we understand that they will perform in Heppner on April 17 We will see you there. (s) Bob and Suzanne Jepsen Heppner Christmas Tree auction and raffle generates over $2000 ODOT schedules Lexington public information meeting A public information meeting will be held on Dec 15 at 7 p m at the Lexington Town Hall, located at 150 W M ain, L exington The meeting is being held as a follow-up to the Aug 17 meeting regarding proposed 2005 roadw ay im provem ents to State Highway 52 in Lexington The improvements are scheduled from A Street to F S treet and include pavem ent overlay and limited bicycle-pedestrian facilities. Improvements to the intersection of Highway 52 and H ighw ay 207 in L exington have been included in the project based on earlier public input Anderson Perry and Associates, Inc., a consulting engineering firm contracted by ODOT to design the roadway improvements in Lexington, will be present to outline the project, answer questions and obtain further public input on the roadway improvem ents Residents and business ow ners in L exington and o th ers interested in the proposed project are encouraged to attend For more information about this meeting, please contact Howard Perry at (541) 963-8309 Sally Larsen with the “Christmas Ball Bonanza" tree she won in the raffle. Obituaries Donald Max Pike William Grant Handy Donald Max Pike, 76, died Dec. 5, 2004, in H erm iston at the G ood Samaritan Center where he lived for the last year Disposition was by cremation and no service will be held upon his request The family will hold a private service at a later date. Pike was born June 15, 1928 in Casper, WY to Orvis A Pike and Evelyn L. Taggart-Pike He attended school in Casper He worked at various jobs in Wyoming In Terrebonne he was a Telegram Delivery Boy and then was a pinsetter in a bowling alley in Alaska He joined the Army on Nov. 25, 1950 and served in Korea On May 7, 1955, he married Barbara Geist in C asper, WY. They first resided in Boundurant, WY w here he was Fence Foreman on the Little Jennie Ranch Later, they returned to Casper where he worked at the Standard Oil Refinery. In 1969, they m oved to Kinzua where they lived until one year after the mill closed They moved to Heppner in 1979. He w orked many years for the M orrow C ounty Public W orks Department before he retired in 1990 due to Parkinson’s. He and wife, Barbara, were Park Hosts at Cutsforth Park from A ugust 1990 until 1998. They then moved to the McNary area of Umatilla in October o f 1999 to be closer to their family. Survivors include his wife, Barbara, at home in M cN ary -U m atilla; his daughter, Debby Van Meter- Simpson o f Gresham; his son, Lance Van Meter, and his wife, Jeannie, who live in Suplpa, OK; his daughter, Patti Constantin and Bud E nglert o f U m atilla; his daughter, Gaylene Cazares, and her husband, Ignacio, and th e ir fam ily in Vancouver, WA; his son, Bruce Pike and his wife, D ebbie o f P o rtlan d ; his daughter, LuAnn Letcher and her husband, Patrick and their family in Gresham; his brother, John; sister, Corky; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, O rvis Pike and Evelyn Austin and by his son-in-law, Roger Simpson M e m o r i a l contributions may be made to the G ood Sam aritan Center in Hermiston. W ord has been received that William Grant Handy, 74, died Nov. 27, 2004. A memorial service was held Dec 4 at Finley’s Sunset Hills Mortuary Handy w as born Nov. 30, 1929, in Ogden, UT He served in the Air Force A graduate o f the U niversity o f U tah, he moved in about 1969 to Portland, where he was a broker o f raw materials and owned William G. Handy Associates He married Roselyn R aleigh, but they later divorced In 1981, he married Vesta Kilkenny. Survivors include his w ife, d au g h ters, Ellie Benson, Margaret H Martin and Laura H. Hammond; son, Thomas W.; stepsons, Russell Kilkenny, Patrick Kilkenny and John Kilkenny; stepdaughter, Kelly Hale; his fo rm er w ife; 14 g ran d ch ild ren ; and five great-grandchildren Remembrances may be made to the Clayton T. Handy Scholarship Fund at St John Fisher School. Henrietta Marie Hermanns H en rietta M arie Hermanns, 79, ofWaitsburg, WA, passed away Dec. 4, 2004, at Booker Rest Home in Dayton, WA. R ecitatio n o f the Rosary was held Dec. 7 and funeral services were held Dec. 8, both at C hapel H erring Funeral Hom e B urial follow ed at Blue M o u n tain M em orial Gardens. Hermanns was born April 6, 1925 in Touchet, WA to Frank M. and Mary W orden W atson She attended grade school in Touchet and graduated from Touchet High School in 1943. On Sept. 6, 1944, she m arried C lifford Hermanns in Walla Walla, WA They farm ed in Heppner for 10 years and then moved to Waitsburg in 1954. They lived in Waitsburg for 50 years Hermanns loved to play pinochle and Bingo She also loved to travel and work in her rose garden She was a member o f St. M ark ’s Catholic Church, St. Mark’s Altar Society, 55 Plus Senior Waitsburg Club and Denova Women’s Club Survivors include her husband, C lifford Hermanns; daughter, Mary Andrews o f Portland; son, Charles W Hermanns o f Irrig o n ; sisters, Lavina M yers o f Touchet, Betty Lythgoe of Walla Walla and Rose Berglund o f Pasco; brother, Cecil W atson o f W alla W alla, WA; three grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers M e m o r i a l contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation, or to a charity o f choice th ro u g h The Herring Funeral Home, 315 West Alder, Walla Walla, WA 99362-2870 H erring Funeral Home o f Walla Walla is in charge of arrangements HLL to meet The Heppner Little League will meet on Dec. 13 at 7 p m. at the Heppner Neighborhood Center Howard E.
